HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Graham Gochneaur is ready. For what, he's not sure yet.
Gochneaur, a junior, could get his first career start if the injured Stan Hill is unable to go when Marshall (1-1) plays at home Friday night against Toledo (1-1).
"I'm sure there will be a little bit of butterflies, but I've had those before," Gochneaur said. "I've just got to be more excited than anything, just ready to get out there and get that first snap."
Coach Bob Pruett has said Hill could miss the game. Gochneaur said he hasn't been told whether Hill will play.
"They just told me to prepare myself as if I'm going to play," Gochneaur said. "They didn't say 'start' or 'come in later.' I don't know what's going to happen with Stan. But all I can do is prepare myself so if I need to go, I'm ready."
Hill sprained his left knee in Saturday's 34-24 loss at Tennessee. He's been walking slowly with crutches in hand just in case. His left leg has been heavily wrapped.
"Right now, I know the nod's leaning towards Graham, but at the same time a lot can happen within two or three days," Hill said Tuesday. "So right now I'm just rehabbing it and hoping to get my knee strengthened back up.
"If I can go Friday, I'll go. If I can't, Graham will get in there and get the job done."
Gochneaur had a decent effort after replacing Hill in the fourth quarter against Tennessee and has been working this week with the first-team offense.
"Yes, sir. He's ready," Pruett said. "I think he's another good quarterback we got. So we're excited about it."
If Gochneaur becomes Marshall's fifth starting quarterback since 1995, he would become the third to get his first start due to injury.
Hill took over for Byron Leftwich last year when Leftwich suffered a stress fracture in his left shin. He directed the Herd to a 36-34 victory over Miami of Ohio, scoring the winning touchdown on a 1-yard run in the waning seconds.
In 1995, Chad Pennington got his first start as a freshman after Larry Harris and Mark Zban went down with injuries. Pennington led the Herd to the NCAA Division I-AA championship game, then redshirted in 1996 behind Eric Kresser. He helped lead the Herd's transition to I-A in 1997 and led the team's 13-0 campaign in 1999.
Gochneaur redshirted last season after leading Kilgore (Texas) Junior College to a 12-0 season in 2001.
Exactly one month ago at Marshall's media day, Gochneaur pondered the thought of starting, saying he was prepared to step in at anytime.
His performance on Saturday added to his confidence. He came in after Hill was injured late in the third quarter to go 7-of-10 for 52 yards, although Marshall did not score.
"If I learned anything, I learned that I can definitely play at this level," Gochneaur said. "It doesn't intimidate me at all. I've played in front of 108,000 in a pressure situation. I've already been there and done that, so it's just going out and taking care of business now."
