Rep. English goes to Mexico to pitch fair trade to the WTO
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd, traveled to Cancun, Mexico, today, but it wasn't for a vacation.
English said he plans to participate in the World Trade Organization Ministerial Meeting in Cancun today through Saturday.
English, a vocal critic of WTO rulings that he believes have hurt American manufacturers, said he planned to take his efforts to fight for fair trade into the international arena.
"As the world's economies come together to work out priorities for the global trading system, I will make sure that western Pennsylvania's concerns are put on the table," he said.
English will take part as a U.S. delegate at the Minister-level meeting.
Trade remedy laws
He has publicly urged U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick to resist international pressure and uphold American trade remedy laws during the session.
"We need our trade laws, and we use them only when called for. We can't allow the WTO to water these critical laws down," English said.
