Program on ferns set at Jennings center
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Ferns are often overlooked because they have no flowers, fruits or seeds.
But at 2 p.m. next Sunday, they will become the center of attention at Jennings Environmental Education Center.
Learn to identify and investigate their intriguing life cycle on a 90-minute guided walk with Jennings staff.
Ancient ferns grew to the size of great trees and were important members of the prehistoric forest. Today, they cover the forest floor in a variety of shapes and sizes from the delicate maidenhair to the hardy Christmas fern.
Due to their mysterious life cycle, ferns were once believed to have the power to make a person invisible. The Jennings program will explore the folklore, anatomy and identity of ferns and provide tips on how to add them to your garden.
Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and other environmentally related activities.
