ERIE ROBBERY FBI clears man asked about crime

ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- One of two men sought by investigators looking into the bizarre case of a bank robber who died when a bomb locked to his chest exploded has been interviewed and was not involved in the case, an FBI agent said Tuesday.
FBI agent Bill Crowley said a black man seen hurriedly crossing an intersection about a mile away from the scene of the explosion was identified and contacted by investigators a day after his sketch was released to the public. Crowley said the man, who was seen crossing an intersection with a black backpack, was hurrying to catch a bus.
The man's identity was not released. Investigators are still looking for another person, a white man seen running out of a wooded area and into traffic along a busy road outside Erie. Authorities say that man ran out of the woods near where the alleged robber, Brian Douglas Wells, had been told to go after the robbery, according to an extensive note he was carrying.
Investigators are still asking for any information about that man.
Wells, a 46-year-old pizza deliveryman, died when the bomb attached to a locked collar around his neck exploded Aug. 28. Police had surrounded him shortly after he robbed a nearby bank, and Wells told authorities someone had forced him to commit the crime.
