Dennis Mamone, social studies teacher at Hayes Middle School, has been named Youngstown's 2003-04 Teacher of the Year. Below are highlights of his 20-year career.
Has taught social studies and coached boys' basketball at Hayes Middle School since 1997.Has coached softball at Woodrow Wilson High School since 1997.Taught social studies, served as junior class adviser and yearbook adviser and coached softball at East High School from 1989 to 1997.Has taught night school social studies since 1990. Served as a substitute teacher from 1983 to 1989.Serves on the Mahoning Valley Historical Society Teacher Advisory Board.Presented workshops at the Kent State University Urban Initiative Conference in 2001 and 2002.Serves or served on several school district committees, including: Curriculum Development, Textbook Selections, Middle School Initiative, Hayes Middle School Continuous Improvement Plan, East High School Building Action Plan and Ohio State University Young Scholars.Presented workshops on Ohio Proficiency Testing for parent groups.Established an annual scholarship fund at Youngstown State University for Woodrow Wilson and East high school softball players.Has won various awards, including: First place at National History Day (2001 and 2003); Mahoning Valley Historical Society recognition; Board of Education recognition for meeting proficiency test scores; and Who's Who Among American Teachers.
