CAMPUS NOTES | In the spotlight



NORTHEASTERN OHIO UNIVERSITIES COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, Rootstown
Robert Budinsky of Poland, a student at Xavier College, was one of several to participate in a 10-week summer research program at NEOUCOM. The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience paired undergraduates from universities across the region with NEOUCOM faculty mentors to help the students better understand research careers. Students worked in labs, attended lectures and presented data to faculty and staff.
CLARION UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
Several area students are among 83 inducted into the education honor society Kappa Delta Pi, which recognizes scholarship, high personal standards and promise in teaching and allied professions. Inducted were junior Elizabeth Jones, daughter of William and Deborah Jones of Sharon; junior Amanda Kennedy, daughter of Patricia and Chris Kennedy of Ellwood City; Roy Martin Jr., son of Roy and Amy Martin of Grove City; junior Jodie Ringer, daughter of Howard and Jean Ringer of Mercer; junior Wendy Roberts, daughter of Terry and Bettelou Roberts of Hadley; and sophomore Jessica Vicozi, daughter of Ed and Janet Cresswell of Hermitage. All are elementary education majors; Roberts also majors in special education.
MOUNT UNION COLLEGE, Alliance
Sophomore biology major Megan Casey, daughter of Tom and Donna Casey of Austintown, received the Mount Union Academic Merit Award for incoming students based on high school academic performance. She is an incoming student from Youngstown State University and a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Janeace Marie Brooke, daughter of Wayne and Marie Brooke of Youngstown, has been inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. The selective nonprofit organization recognizes first- and second-year undergraduate students who excel academically. Brooks, a junior speech/audiology major, is a 2001 Cardinal Mooney graduate.
UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO
J.H. Huebert, 24, a North Lima native, has been named a John M. Olin Student Fellow in Law and Economics at the university's law school for the 2003-04 academic year. Fellowships are awarded annually to upper-level law students who demonstrate outstanding ability and interest in the area of law and economics. Each Fellow receives a grant of $5,000 and is required to write a paper. Huebert's winning proposal was on the successful dispute resolution processes used by credit card companies without help from government entities. Huebert, son of John and Melva Huebert of North Lima, is a 1997 graduate of South Range High School. He received an economics degree from Grove City College in 2001. He entered the University of Chicago Law School in fall 2001.
PENN STATE UNIVERSITY, Shenango campus
Freshman Theresa Schwartzbauer of Greenville was recently awarded the 2003-04 Sharonsteel Foundation Scholar four-year, full-tuition grant to Penn State. She is the seventh area student awarded the scholarship based on academic achievement, school ad community involvement, financial need and recommendation. Schwartzbauer is the daughter of Martin R. Schwartzbauer of Conneaut Lake and Tracy A. Huff of Greenville. She is a 2003 graduate of Conneaut Lake High School.
