NFL ROUNDUP News and notes

Rams: Kurt Warner got out of the hospital Monday and was doing better a day after sustaining a concussion. He won't, however, start Sunday at quarterback when the St. Louis Rams face San Francisco in their home opener. Coach Mike Martz said he'll likely wait until the end of the week to make a decision whether to activate Warner, but backup Marc Bulger -- 6-1 last year -- almost certainly will start. "I'm just going to count on starting Marc, basically," Martz said. "I'm going to err on the side of caution in this situation." The Rams also moved to add depth at quarterback, signing Scott Covington and releasing Kirk Farmer. Covington was a backup with St. Louis last year. Team doctors described Warner's concussion as mild to moderate. A CT scan and X-rays on Warner's neck and head taken Sunday night were negative. Rookie wide receiver Shaun McDonald will be sidelined four-to-six weeks after injuring his thumb.
Panthers: Jake Delhomme was named starting quarterback after leading the team from 17 points down to a 24-23 win over Jacksonville. When Rodney Peete was ineffective in the first half, coach John Fox had no choice but to play Delhomme in the second half. Delhomme, who signed a two-year contract worth $4 million, threw three touchdown passes, including the game winner with 16 seconds remaining. Linebacker Mike Caldwell will be out at least one month because of an injured left knee.
Titans: Kicker Joe Nedney tore a ligament in his non-kicking leg and will have season-ending surgery. Nedney was hurt while making a tackle on a kickoff. Punter Craig Hentrich, who kicked 39 field goals while at Notre Dame, replaced Nedney and made three field goals, tying his career high. But coach Jeff Fisher said Hentrich is not an option right now. Fisher also said quarterback Steve McNair sprained his left knee and will be questionable for practice. Tight end Frank Wycheck suffered his second concussion in less than a month.
Bears: Starting guard Chris Villarrial will miss four-to-six weeks because of a sprained left knee. Villarrial damaged the medial collateral ligament Sunday in the second quarter of Chicago's 49-7 loss to San Francisco. It is the fourth major injury to the Bears' offensive line. NFL Europe veteran Josh Warner will replace Villarrial. Guard Rex Tucker, hurt in the Bears final preseason game, is out for the season, and tackle Marc Columbo is still out from an injury sustained last season. Bears coach Dick Jauron said tackle Terrence Metcalf was to be examined today to find out whether he can begin practicing with contact this week.
Dolphins: Cornerback Sam Madison wore a boot Monday to protect his bruised left ankle, and didn't say if he'll play Sunday against the Jets. The injury forced the Pro Bowl cornerback to sit out the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to Houston. Backup safety Shawn Wooden's status is also uncertain. He strained his right hamstring and broke his left hand against Houston.
Jets: Quarterback Jamie Martin, who was released last week, was re-signed. He is the No. 3 quarterback with the Jets behind Vinny Testaverde and Brooks Bollinger.
Lions: Cornerback Alex Molden was signed one day after Detroit allowed 344 yards passing to Arizona. Molden was released by Washington during training camp.
Vikings: Strong safety Corey Chavous is doubtful for Sunday's game against Chicago because of a sprained right knee. Second-year player Willie Offord would replace Chavous in the starting lineup. Free safety Jack Brewer is also out at least another two weeks because of an upper chest injury.
Seahawks: Rookie fullback Chris Davis will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ligament in his left knee.
Cardinals: Right guard Leonard Davis' sprained right ankle was examined for tendon damage. Larry Foster (ankle), Bryan Gilmore (knee) and Kevin Kasper (back) also were sent for tests. In addition, defensive end-linebacker LeVar Woods suffered a concussion.
