SOCCER U.S. women blank Mexico to stay unbeaten in last 24 games
Mia Hamm scored her 142nd goal to pad her world record for goals.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Mia Hamm added to her world-record goal-scoring Sunday, helping the United States women's soccer team beat Mexico 5-0 in the national team's final tune-up for the Women's World Cup.
Hamm scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, with the other goals coming from Shannon Boxx, Abby Wambach, Brandi Chastain and Aly Wagner. Julie Foudy set up two goals as the Americans remained unbeaten in their last 24 games (22-0-2) at home, and improved to 9-0 against Mexico.
The Women's World Cup begins Sept. 20. The United States plays Sweden the next day in Washington.
Sixth goal of year
Hamm scored her 142nd goal in international play on a penalty kick following a hand ball. It was her sixth goal of the year, matching Shannon MacMillan for the team lead. Chastain and Wagner also made penalty kicks.
Boxx became the third American women to score in her first two games with the national team, joining Michelle Akers and Natalie Neaton. She also scored in a 5-0 victory over Costa Rica a week ago.
MacMillan returned to action against Costa Rica for the first time since injuring her right knee in May.
U.S. goalkeeper Briana Scurry left the game after an injury in the 68th minute. Siri Mullinix completed the shutout.
Shooting advantage
Mexico goalkeeper Jennifer Molina made nine saves, six in the second half. The Americans out-shot Mexico 35-4.
Mexico, one of the youngest teams in the world, lost to Japan in July for the final World Cup spot after becoming the first Spanish-speaking country to qualify for the World Cup in 1999.
Boxx opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Foudy, who will be playing in her fourth World Cup, sent a corner kick toward the front of the net. The ball bounced off a defender and Boxx kicked it in.
Foudy also set up the second goal in the 25th minute. She sent a pass to the right corner of the box to Wambach, who left-footed a shot into the top left corner of the net.
U.S. player Kylie Bivens received a red card in the 83rd minute.
