NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Pittsburgh man died after he was ejected from a car on Pa. Route 551. State police said David Kandzar, 41, was a passenger in a car traveling east on Pa. Route 108 that entered the intersection of Pa. Route 551 without stopping at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The car went into a private driveway and began to slide sideways before turning over and ejecting Kandzar from the car. The driver, Guy Panza, 37, of Pittsburgh, was treated for moderate injuries at Jameson Hospital, police said. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.
Railroad ties burn
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- The CSX Railroad in Mahoning Township was closed to rail traffic for about two hours Sunday as firefighters battled a nearby fire. About 300 railroad ties burned in a suspicious fire near Robinson's Crossing in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, said Fire Chief Poncho Exposito. The fire started around 5:45 a.m., and Union and Pulaski firefighters were called to help put it out. Exposito said there are about 3,000 railroad ties piled in the area because railroad officials recently replaced ties along the tracks. No value to the ties was available.
Civil War Roundtableto decide on topics
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Historical Society's Civil War Roundtable, the first of the season, will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the society's headquarters, 119 S. Pitt St., Mercer. Those attending will decide discussion topics for the next nine months and meeting formats. There will also be a discussion about Stonewall Jackson and his connection to Mercer County. The Civil War discussion group is part of the society's ongoing efforts to provide programming related to local history. Participation is free and open to the public. PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Members of the Moraine Preservation Fund are offering to provide presentations to civic groups, organizations and schools with Annie the Barn Owl. 5 vehicle break-ins
SALEM -- Five vehicles were reported broken into throughout the city over the weekend. The break-ins occurred on Southeast Boulevard, Ellsworth and Ohio avenues and Maple and East Third streets, police said. Items taken included $300 worth of tools and a compact disc player.
Windshield damaged
SALEM -- Someone damaged the windshield of a vehicle while it was parked at a residence on the 400 block of South Ellsworth Avenue, police said. About five small holes were put into the glass. The vandalism was reported at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Boat and trailer stolen
SALEM -- A 21-foot boat and trailer were stolen from a home on the 100 block of West 13th Street, police said. The boat and trailer, valued at about $5,000, were taken sometime between 2 and 6 p.m. Sunday.
Culvert replacementon state Route 154
ROGERS -- Traffic is restricted to one lane on state Route 154 east of Rogers for replacement of a culvert. Ohio Department of Transportation officials said the work is to be completed by mid-November. Traffic flow is controlled with a temporary traffic light. Tri-Span Corp. of New Middletown has the contract for the $557,000 project.
Safety services grants
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Volunteer fire, rescue and ambulance companies are eligible for a piece of a new $25 million state grant program. State Rep. Rod Wilt of Greenville, R-17th, said the Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service program can provide grants of up to $15,000 for fire companies and up to $10,000 for ambulance units to help finance building construction or equipment purchases as well as training. Applications must be filed by Dec. 31 with the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.
