Iceland held World Cup runner-up Germany to a scoreless tie Saturday night in a qualifier for next year's European Championship, and England beat Macedonia 2-1 as 17-year-old Wayne Rooney became the youngest player to score for his country.
At Reykjavik, Iceland outplayed the Germans for much of the game. With five minutes remaining, English referee Graham Barber ignored Eidur Gudjohnsen's calls for a penalty kick after he appeared to be brought down by Sebastian Kehl.
Iceland (4-2-1), which has one game left, leads Group Five with 13 points, one ahead of Germany (3-0-3), who has two games remaining. Germany is home against Scotland on Wednesday, then hosts Iceland on Oct. 11.
In the other Group Five game, Scotland (3-1-2) won 3-1 over the Faeroe Islands (0-6-1) at Glasgow on goals by Neil McCann, Paul Dickov and James McFadden.
The 10 group winners qualify for the 16-nation field for next summer's tournament in Portugal, and the second-place teams advance to playoffs.
England vs. Macedonia
At Skopje, England fell behind when Georgi Hristov scored in the 28th minute, but Rooney beat goalkeeper Petar Milosevski with a low shot from 12 yards in the 53rd minute. At 17 years, 317 days, Rooney broke the mark set by teammate Michael Owen.
David Beckham converted a penalty kick in the 63rd minute after John Terry was pulled down in the penalty area by Aguinaldo de Jesus Braga. Beckham claimed he was spat on and verbally abused by unnamed Macedonian players. According to Beckham, one opponent told him, "Be careful, you'll die tonight."
"I've been through a lot worse than that," Beckham said. "Still, there are things on the [field] that shouldn't be going on."
In the other Group Seven game, Turkey won 3-0 at Liechtenstein. Turkey (6-1) is first with 16 points, one ahead of England (5-0-1), which plays at Turkey on Oct. 11.
