The Colorado Rockies activated Nelson Cruz from the 15-day disabled list Friday, and sent him outright to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
The Rockies recalled right-handers Scott Elarton and Jason Young, infielders Garrett Atkins and Clint Barmes and outfielder Mark Sweeney from Colorado.
All five were on the 40-man roster.
Colorado also purchased the contract of infielder Kit Pellow from Colorado Springs.
The Rockies had planned to bring Cruz back to the major league roster, but felt he used bad judgment when he left the park during a rehabilitation start Monday at Colorado Springs. Cruz gave up eight runs, retiring only two batters, and left the park after he was removed from the game.
Cruz was 3-5 this season for Colorado with a 7.21 ERA in 20 games, including seven starts.
The San Diego Padres placed first baseman Ryan Klesko on the 15-day disabled list Friday, a day after he had surgery on his right shoulder.
Assistant trainer Jim Daniel said that Klesko has arthritic calcification in the shoulder. The surgery was similar to the second surgery that closer Trevor Hoffman had in February.
Klesko finished the season hitting .252 with a team-high 21 homers and 67 RBIs.
