AREA COLLEGES Besgrove scores 3 TDs to wreck Westminster
Grove City defeated Hiram with a potent offense.
CANTON -- Derek Besgrove ran 28 times for 187 yards and three touchdowns as Walsh University defeated Westminster 43-20 Saturday.
It was the season opener for each school.
Besgrove scored on runs of 89, 3 and 3 yards as the Cavaliers opened a 27-6 lead at the break.
Chris Brink hauled in three passes for 62 yards, including scoring strikes of 15 and 24 yards from Dan Kane for Walsh.
Scott Froelich led the Titans with 22 carries for 101 yards.
Tom Froelich returned a fumble 35 yards in the fourth quarter for Westminster.
Baldwin-Wallace 45, Allegheny 26
BEREA -- Mark Anders ran for three touchdowns and Dan Larlham threw one TD pass and ran for two scores in the season opener for both teams.
Anders had touchdown runs of 6 yards, 56 yards and 6 yards in a 10-minute span of the first quarter.
Larlham ran 8 yards for a second-quarter touchdown and 7 yards for a TD in the third period and threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Gary Kopchak in the second.
Kevin Hille kicked a 32-yard field goal for BW with 12:47 left in the first half.
Allegheny's Bubba Smith threw touchdown passes of 5 yards to Brian Woods in the second quarter, 66 yards to Woods in the third and 2 yards to Jon Turner in the fourth.
Aaron Polack kicked a 21-yard field goal for Allegheny with one second left in the first half.
Grove City 68, Hiram 20
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Steve Roberts scored five touchdowns, four rushing and one on a 35-yard punt return, as Grove City beat Hiram in the opener for both teams.
Roberts had 96 yards on 17 carries as Grove City had 337 yards rushing while holding Hiram to just 7 yards on 29 carries.
Grove City led 27-0 after the first quarter, on Roberts' touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards, and the punt return, and on Sam Mowrey's 54-yard pass to Dave DiDonato.
Hiram didn't score until Tom Roszell hit John Papcostas on a 31-yard pass to make it 34-6 with 6:24 left in the first half. Roszell would add another touchdown pass, 3 yards to Matt Watroba, early in the fourth quarter.
Roberts had two touchdown runs in the second half, 3 and 8 yards, while Adam Wargo added a 19-yard scoring run. Wargo finished the day with 80 yards on seven carries.
The 68 points was Grove City's highest score since a 71-21 victory over Bluffton in 1997 and the most on opening day since a 90-0 win over Morris Harvey in 1930.
John Carroll 42, Thiel 0
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Tony Beiting threw three touchdown passes and Brandon Oing ran for two scores to lead John Carroll.
Beiting, who completed 19 of 25 attempts for 268 yards, threw scoring passes of 6 yards to Antoine Dunklin in the second quarter, 38 yards to Pete Bernini in the third and 12 yards to Matt Bostick in the fourth.
Oing had touchdown runs of 1 yard in the first quarter and 2 yards in the third.
John Carroll also scored on a 2-yard run by John Van der Oord with 7:50 left in the fourth quarter.
Thiel's Daryl Moore completed 10 of 15 passes for 177 yards. Thiel was held to 6 rushing yards on 31 attempts.
Carnegie Mellon 38, Bethany 24
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Bethany suffered seven turnovers and fell behind 21-0 early.
Carnegie Mellon intercepted two passes and turned the thefts into scores with the game just 3 minutes old.
Bethany quarterback Sean Yanni, a native of East Liverpool, was intercepted four times.
Quarterback Jarrod Highberger ran 8 yards for a score to make it 21-0 with 8 minutes left in the first quarter.
Bethany closed with a 17-0 run, but the Tartans led 24-17 at the break.
Mansfield 20, Bowie State 0
MANSFIELD, Pa. -- Travis Motley passed for 191 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mansfield to the decision.
Joe Bennett capped a 44-yard drive in the first quarter with a sliding catch of Motley's 19-yard TD pass to put Mansfield (1-0) up 6-0. Motley also threw TD passes of 23 yards to Eddie Van Buren in the second quarter and 21 yards to Dan Bennett in the third.
Franklin & amp; Marshall 30, Oberlin 6
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Scott Stephen ran for 86 yards and scored three touchdowns as Franklin & amp; Marshall recorded the win.
Stephen scored on a 2-yard pass from Jeff Harner midway through the second quarter and then again on a 2-yard run 16 seconds before half to give Franklin & amp; Marshall (1-0) a 16-0 halftime lead.
Harner was 17-of-33 passing for 226 yards, including a 76-yard pass to Justin Salton in the second quarter.
Tiffin 42, Butler 6
TIFFIN -- Ryan Harpold threw three first-half touchdown passes to Nate Washington to lead Tiffin.
Washington caught touchdown passes of 35- and 7-yards and a pass for a two-point conversion as Tiffin (1-1) took a 14-0 first quarter lead. Early in the second quarter Harpold connected with Washington on an 80-yard touchdown pass.
Garrion Gorbin rushed for 124 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown run that gave the Dragons a 28-0 halftime lead.
Waynesburg 70, Denison 14
GRANVILLE -- Jeff Dumm threw four touchdowns as Waynesburg opened its season with a win.
Dumm completed 14-of-18 passes for 156 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown pass to Ivan Hawkins with 3:35 left in the first half to put Waynesburg up 28-14.
Dumm threw touchdown passes of 24- and 3-yards to Paul D'Imperio and a 2-yarder to Jared Plisko.
