YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown-Mahoning Valley United Way's annual Day of Caring is Tuesday, when about 400 volunteers from 45 local businesses and agencies do community service projects. The event will kick off with a breakfast at 8 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Banquet Hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel. Projects include painting, cleaning, home repairs, serving meals and participating in activities and field trips. The United Way campaign officially gets under way at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the banquet hall.
Shooting victim
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ervin C. Cowan Jr., 33, of Lakewood Avenue remained in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the abdomen around 2 p.m. Sunday at his home. Police were unable to get a statement from Cowan, but a witness said he had been arguing in the kitchen with another man and four shots were fired, reports show. No arrests had been made as of this morning.
Suspects in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gunfire erupted from a car on the South Side Sunday night and police caught one of the two suspects who jumped out of the car when it slowed on Brooklyn Avenue. Quentin Burley, 18, of West Warren Avenue was arrested on charges of discharging a firearm and possession of a dangerous ordnance. The suspects' abandoned car continued on and struck a car parked in a driveway in the 100 block of Brooklyn, police said. Officers said they found a machine gun, 9mm gun and 18 casings inside the car. Burley told police that he and his companion fired at a house on East Lucius Avenue after five or six men fired at them, reports show.
Spray-painting graffiti
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two boys and two girls -- from Hubbard, Austintown and Youngstown -- seen spray-painting graffiti Sunday evening on the Interstate 680 footbridge over Elberen Street were identified to police by a witness, issued citations and released to their parents. The two boys, 13 and 12, are from Austintown. The girls, both 12, are from Hubbard and Youngstown.
Threatened with knife
NILES -- Three friends told police they locked themselves in a car when a woman threatened them with a knife. A 26-year-old Belmont Avenue woman told police she and her friends were outside her home at 6:15 p.m. Saturday when a female neighbor came after them with a large knife and threatened to kill them. The three got into a car and locked the doors, as the neighbor began pounding on the window with the knife, according to reports. No charges have been filed.
British Car Show
WARREN -- The National Packard Museum's 12th annual British Car Show and Swap Meet will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. This is the second year the North Coast Triumph Association has brought its European Marc to the museum grounds. The show features the MG Midget, MGB, Spitfire, Austin Healy, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Rolls Royce and others. Some 200 cars are anticipated. Activities will include car-related games, awards and food. General admission is $6 for the day and includes admission to the museum. Children younger than 16 get in free. Registration forms are available at the museum for owners of British cars who want to participate. Regular museum hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Regular admission is $5 for adults and $3 for age 65 and older and children 7 to 12.
5 vehicle break-ins
SALEM -- Five vehicles were reported broken into throughout the city over the weekend. The break-ins occurred on Southeast Boulevard, Ellsworth and Ohio avenues and Maple and East Third streets, police said.
Windshield damaged
SALEM -- Someone damaged the windshield of a vehicle while it was parked at a residence on the 400 block of South Ellsworth Avenue, police said. About five small holes were put into the glass. The vandalism was reported at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Boat and trailer stolen
SALEM -- A 21-foot boat and trailer were stolen from a home on the 100 block of West 13th Street, police said. The boat and trailer, valued at about $5,000, were taken sometime between 2 and 6 p.m. Sunday.
