Surgery for Vizquel; Ludwick out for season
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel had season-ending knee surgery Friday and outfielder Ryan Ludwick will miss the rest of the year because of a knee injury.
Ludwick jammed and bruised his right knee during a play at first base Wednesday in Detroit.
Ludwick, acquired in a trade with Texas in December, was hitting .265 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs in 39 games for Cleveland. He had become a clutch hitter for the Indians, going 18-for-44 (.409) with runners in scoring position, including three homers 17 RBIs.
Vizquel had surgery on his right knee to repair cartilage. The Indians expect him to be ready for spring training.
The 36-year-old shortstop originally tore cartilage in his knee while sliding into home at Arizona on June 6. During his rehab, doctors discovered another tear. He returned to the Indians last week, but was unable to play because of soreness and swelling.
Infielder John McDonald also underwent knee surgery Friday in Colorado. McDonald, who also has been troubled by a strained lower back, was put on the disabled list last week.
