OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK | From Ohio Stadium
On a roll: Ohio State extended its winning streak to 16 games -- the longest active streak in the country. The Buckeyes have won 33 straight nonconference home games. They last lost a nonconference home game to USC in 1990.
Record-breaker: Will Allen's 100-yard interception return for a touchdown was an Ohio Stadium record, breaking Howard "Hopalong" Cassady's 88-yard return against Wisconsin in 1954. Allen also tied the school record, which he shares with David Brown, who did it at Purdue in 1986, and Marlon Kerner, who did it at Purdue in 1993.
Streak snapped: Senior kicker Mike Nugent extended his school-record streak of consecutive field goals made in Ohio Stadium to 17 with his 38- and 32-yard kicks in the first quarter. The streak ended when he missed a 28-yard attempt in the third quarter.
Poor showing: The Buckeyes were held to less than 200 yards on offense for the first time since Sept. 22, 2002, when they lost at UCLA. Ohio State finished with 196 yards against the Aztecs. It was also the first time the Bucks were held without an offensive touchdown since last October's 13-6 win over Penn State.
Not finished: Ohio State athletics director Andy Geiger said the school has still not finished its investigation into the allegations surrounding sophomore running back Maurice Clarett, who has been suspended indefinitely by the team. The NCAA does not prohibit schools from releasing information after the investigation is complete. When Geiger was asked if OSU would eventually release the information, he replied, "We'll see."
Who are these guys? Ohio State won its only other meeting with San Diego State, 27-12, in 2001. The game was postponed following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Buckeyes are 7-1 all-time against Mountain West teams, with their only loss coming to Air Force in the 1990 Liberty Bowl.
Another win: Senior quarterback Craig Krenzel improved to 17-1 as a starter for the Buckeyes, with his only loss coming in the 2002 Outback Bowl. Coach Jim Tressel improved to 23-5 at Ohio State, including 14-2 at home. His career record is 158-62-2.
Up next: Ohio State will host North Carolina State at noon Saturday. The game will be televised by ABC. -- Joe Scalzo
