DISTRICT Tigers rip Bulldogs in first win
Julian Caraballo led Springfield with 111 yards and two touchdowns.
EAST PALESTINE -- Julian Caraballo rushed for 111 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns Friday to lead Springfield to its first victory of the season, 26-8 over winless East Palestine.
A junior, Caraballo scored on runs of 3 and 28 yards for the Tigers. Melio Rios added 65 yards on 10 carries.
Springfield quarterback Mason McCambridge threw two touchdown passes -- to Tobey Culler of 15 yards and Anthony Terlecky of 8. McCambridge completed 10-of-16 passes for 89 yards.
Culler finished with four catches for 34 yards and Aaron Wood added four catches for 35 yards.
East Palestine was led by Ralph Lattanzio with 12 carries for 36 yards. He also had two catches for 40 yards.
Newton Falls 35, Crestview 7
EAST FAIRFIELD -- Andy Grunder scored twice by reception and Matt Gillespie scored twice via rush to help lift Newton Falls into the win column.
After losses to Ravenna Southeast and Warren JFK, Newton Falls did all of its scoring in the first three quarters before Crestview got on the board when Eric Gustafson recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Aaron Spahlinger threw both TD passes to Grunder, a senior wideout whose only two catches of the night totaled 51 yards.
Jim Kellar had Newton Falls' fifth touchdown when he picked put a blocked punt and return it 30 yards. Teammate Bill McCartney was credited with blocking the attempt.
The Tigers had 340 yards of which 238 were on the ground. Spahlinger completed five of eight aerials for 102 yards.
Gillespie, a senior tailback, was the winner's leading rusher with 133 yards on 23 carries.
Crestview had 73 yards rushing while Jordan Reynolds completed six of 15 passes for 68 yards. He threw one interception. Derek McElhaney caught four of the passes for 41 yards.
Reynolds also gained 26 yards on the ground.
Lisbon 49, Wellsville 7
LISBON -- Senior quarterback Jay Yorty ran for four touchdowns and passed for one while Jacob Wycoff kicked seven PATs as Lisbon won its third straight game.
The Blue Devils' previous wins were over Martins Ferry and LaBrae. Wellsville dropped to 0-3.
It marked the third game in which Lisbon was scored upon first before battling back.
Josh Grafton caught Yorty's TD pass which covered 29 yards and the sophomore tailback also ran for a touchdown from 12 yards out. Lisbon's other score was by senior fullback Frank Gallo.
Lisbon had 446 total yards of which 386 were on the ground.
Yorty ran for 156 yards and completed three passes for 60 yards. His longest completion was the 29-yarder to Grafton.
Wellsville had 123 total yards of which 110 came in the first half. The Tigers scored on their first possession when Vince Ross caught a 67-yard pass from Mark Lascola.
Southeast 41, Garfield 34
RAVENNA -- In the shootout, the Pirates built a 27-12 lead by intermission, then held off Garrettsville Garfield to prevail.
Sean Fisher of the Pirates hit on 11 of 16 passes for 222 yards, including TD strikes to Dustin Stewart for 15 yards, to Brad Finch for 80 yards and to Jon Steele for 26 yards.
Stewart also gained 183 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 36 yards.
Akron East 45, Canton Timken 0
CANTON -- Timken (0-3) of the City Series gained 7 yards on 26 attempts and it was 1 of 14 passing for 6 yards.
