AROUND THE HORN Friday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Athletics 3, Devil Rays 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Ted Lilly pitched six solid innings and Mark Ellis had an RBI double as the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Lilly (9-9) allowed one run and four hits, struck out seven and walked two, improving to 4-0 against the Devil Rays. Jim Mecir, Chad Bradford and Keith Foulke completed the four-hitter. Foulke got four straight outs for his 39th save in 44 chances. The AL West-leading Athletics started the day with a two-game lead over Seattle. Oakland swept a three-game series from the Devil Rays at home last weekend. Tampa Bay took four of six from the Mariners over the past 11 days.
Twins 10, Rangers 7
MINNEAPOLIS -- Cristian Guzman hit a three-run triple and Juan Rincon pitched three outstanding inning off relief as the Minnesota Twins hung on to beat the Texas Rangers. Rincon (4-6) threw three perfect innings after starter Johan Santana faltered for the first time in a month, nearly squandering an early 8-2 lead. But Guzman drove in a career-high four runs as the Twins stayed tied with the White Sox atop the AL Central. The Twins play a four-game series at Chicago starting Monday.
Mariners 6, Orioles 4, 13 innings
BALTIMORE -- Kerry Ligtenberg hit Bret Boone with a pitch in the 13th inning, forcing in the tiebreaking run as the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles. Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-run homer and Carlos Guillen drove in three runs for the Mariners, who remained two games behind first-place Oakland in the AL West and a half-game behind Boston in the wild-card race. Seattle, coming off consecutive shutout losses at Tampa Bay, blew a three-run lead before winning.
Blue Jays 8, Tigers 6
TORONTO -- Mike Maroth became the first major league pitcher in 23 years to lose 20 games in a season as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Toronto Blue Jays. Maroth (6-20) allowed eight runs and nine hits in three-plus innings, becoming the first 20-game loser since Oakland's Brian Kingman went 8-20 in 1980. Kingman, who wanted to remain baseball's last 20-game loser, attended the game and brought a voodoo doll with him. It's the same doll he took to four other starts in which a major league pitcher could have lost his 20th game but didn't.
Royals 5, Angels 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Brian Anderson pitched a seven-hitter for his third career shutout, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Anaheim Angels. Angel Berroa hit a solo homer for Kansas City, which remained 11/2 games behind Chicago and Minnesota, who are tied for the AL Central lead. Anderson (11-11) struck out two and walked three in his first shutout since Aug. 17, 1999, for Arizona against the Chicago Cubs. Anderson, 2-1 since the Royals acquired him from Cleveland on Aug. 25, lost to Anaheim 7-4 at home on Sunday.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Cubs 4, Brewers 2
MILWAUKEE -- Sammy Sosa hit his 33rd home run and Juan Cruz outdueled Ben Sheets as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in a tense matchup. The Cubs began the day a half-game behind NL Central-leading Houston, which played at San Diego. Chicago won its fifth in a row at Miller Park. Cruz (2-5) made his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Aug. 31. Last Sunday, he went 5 1-3 innings in a 2-0 loss to the Brewers.
Expos 6, Marlins 2
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Todd Zeile hit two home runs and the Montreal Expos opened their final homestand in Puerto Rico by beating the Florida Marlins in a game delayed more than an hour by a power outage. Zeile became the first player in major league history to homer for 11 different teams. His shots helped drop Florida one game behind Philadelphia in the NL wild-card race, while Montreal remained 51/2 games back. A crowd of 11,509 watched at Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
Reds 4, Cardinals 2
ST. LOUIS -- Wily Mo Pena tripled home the tiebreaking run in the 12th inning to cap his first three-hit game as the Cincinnati Reds rallied past the reeling St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis, which wasted a 2-1 lead in the ninth, has lost five of six. The Cardinals started the night one game behind NL Central-leading Houston, which played a late game, and dropped 11/2 games behind the second-place Chicago Cubs. Cardinals star Jim Edmonds missed his third straight start because of a bruised right knee, and slumping Edgar Renteria was given the night off. Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in the first for the Cardinals.
Phillies 1, Mets 0
PHILADELPHIA -- Vicente Padilla kept up his mastery over New York, striking out a season-high 10 in eight innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies over the Mets. Marlon Byrd drove in the only run in the eighth inning with a single just off the outstreched glove of shortstop Jorge Velandia, scoring Nick Punto. The Phillies, who entered the game tied for the NL wild-card lead, have won four straight and seven of eight after a miserable August. Rheal Cormier got three outs for his first save with the Phillies. Manager Larry Bowa said Jose Mesa has lost his closer's job again after blowing two save chances in four days.
Dodgers 8, Rockies 7
DENVER -- Adrian Beltre went 4-for-5, homered twice and drove in three runs, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers rally past the Colorado Rockies. Los Angeles rebounded from 6-1 and 7-2 deficits and sent Colorado to its sixth straight loss. The Dodgers have won six of their last eight games and remained three games behind Philadelphia in the NL wild-card race. Todd Hundley had a pinch-hit, three-run homer for Los Angeles in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 7-6.
