Summer food program feeds 2,400 children
YOUNGSTOWN -- More than 2,400 children were served meals this year through Mahoning County's annual summer food program, sponsored by county commissioners. During June, July and August, more than 52,300 breakfast meals and 70,800 lunches were served at 69 sites around the county.
Commissioner Ed Reese said the program was funded through seed money generated by a 0.5 percent county sales tax. Commissioners thanked Mildred Porter, who is retiring from the summer food program staff after 22 years. The summer food program provides nutritious meals for low-income children ages 1 through 18.
