Parker Hannifin cuts 27 jobs because of demand slump

YOUNGSTOWN -- Parker Hannifin Corp. is cutting 27 salaried jobs from its Youngstown plant and two others.
Officials will decide which jobs will be cut after workers decide whether to take a voluntary severance package of one month's salary, said Jim Cartwright, a spokesman for the Cleveland-based company. If not enough workers accept the package, positions will be eliminated.
Cuts are considered permanent and will be made as early as next week. They are coming from Parker's hydraulic plants in Youngstown; Sarasota, Fla.; and Kings Mountain, N.C.
Parker is eliminating 13 percent of the 209 salaried jobs at those plants because of a slump in demand for hydraulic products, Cartwright said. Those products are used in garbage trucks and other trucks that haven't been selling well, he said.
The Youngstown plant, located in the Salt Springs Road Industrial Park, makes hydraulic pumps. Parker acquired the plant when it bought Youngstown-based Commercial Intertech Corp. in 2000.
