Rookie hurts knee in Tigers' win
The teams combined for six homers in Detroit's 8-6 win.
DETROIT (AP) -- It didn't take Cody Ross long to become the center of attention for the Detroit Tigers.
The 22-year-old outfielder, recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, hit a grand slam for his first major league homer and was later carted off the field with an apparent left knee injury as Detroit beat the Cleveland Indians 8-6 Tuesday night.
Ross played most of the season at Toledo, where he hit .287 with 20 homers, 61 RBIs and 35 doubles. He had an earlier stint with the Tigers in July, going 1-for-12.
Tuesday, Ross gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead in the third with his grand slam.
But in the eighth, he was injured after stepping on first base while beating out a sacrifice on reliever Jack Cressend's throwing error. Ross was writhing in pain, holding both knees, as Tigers personnel attended to him. He was taken off the field on a flatbed cart.
"That's a pretty sad thing -- I'm hoping he's OK," said Tigers catcher Brandon Inge, who played with Ross at Toledo this season. "He plays hard. He's one of my favorite guys that I've ever played with."
Ross was taken to the hospital for an MRI. The results wouldn't be known until today.
"You'd hope that was the first of many nights like that for him," Detroit manager Alan Trammell said. "He works so hard and has a great attitude."
35 wins
Dmitri Young hit a tie-breaking homer in the fifth as the Tigers won their 35th game of the season. Detroit needs to go 8-17 the rest of the way to avoid matching the 1962 New York Mets' record of 120 losses in a season.
The teams combined for six home runs.
Brian Schmack (1-0) pitched 11/3 innings of scoreless relief for his first big league win, and Fernando Rodney struck out four of the six batters he faced for his first career save.
The Indians tied it at 6 in the fourth on two-run homers by Ben Broussard and Brandon Phillips.
"I was glad I was able to get something to drive and knock someone in," Broussard said. "We came back and got it tied back up, which I think shows a lot about our team. We were down four and came right back and put four up. It seemed like they got us at the end."
Durbin loses
Young homered off Chad Durbin (0-1) in the fifth -- his 28th -- to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead. Pinch-hitter Warren Morris made it 8-6 with an RBI single in the eighth.
The Indians had runners on first and third with none out in the eighth. But Rodney came in to strike out Phillips and Coco Crisp and get Omar Vizquel to pop to short. Jody Gerut put Cleveland ahead 2-0 in the first with a two-run homer, his 19th of the season.
Detroit tied it with two outs in the second. Carlos Pena hit his 16th home run of the season, a solo shot. Shane Halter followed with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch by Cliff Lee. Inge then looped a single to right to score Halter.
