Judge sentences man for assault

MERCER, Pa. -- A New Castle man was sentenced to 15 to 50 months in prison Wednesday by Judge Thomas Dobson of Mercer County Common Pleas Court for assaulting several officers at the Mercer County Jail.
Alexander Harmon, 24, of South Milton Street, pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
According to court documents, Sgt. Doyle Whenry of the jail suspected Harmon was smoking marijuana in his cell in October 2001. He ordered two corrections officers to search Harmon and his cell. But Harmon refused to hand over a bag of marijuana he had concealed in his rectal area and kicked, punched and tried to bite Whenry and two other officers. Whenry suffered a concussion, and another officer needed emergency treatment. Harmon was finally subdued with chemical spray.
He was given 199 days' credit for time served.
Also sentenced
Several others were also sentenced recently:
USequioa King, 16, no address given, was placed on two years' probation and ordered to pay restitution for misdemeanor simple assault. A resident of a Farrell group home, she attacked another resident of the home July 31, cutting the girl's finger so severely that she needed eight stitches. Although only 15 at the time of the assault, she was prosecuted as an adult.
ULaurie Armagost, 30, of Main Street, Jamestown, was placed on two years' probation for making false reports, a misdemeanor. According to court documents, she reported to Jamestown police late last summer that she had been raped. After a six-month investigation, though, she admitted it never happened.
UMichael Bloodsaw, 44, of Emerson Avenue, Farrell, was sentenced to six to 24 months in jail for criminal conspiracy to deliver cocaine. He conspired to sell crack cocaine from his home on two occasions.
ULinda Ealy, 42, of Clarksville Street, Greenville, was placed on two years' probation and ordered to make restitution for welfare fraud, a misdemeanor. According to court documents, between Oct. 1, 1999, and Aug. 31, 2000, she tried to get food stamps and public assistance while failing to disclose all child support paid to her. This resulted in a $1,169 overpayment to her from the Mercer County Assistance Office in Hermitage.
UDennis Emph, 49, of Flowers Avenue, Sharon, was placed on one year's probation for misdemeanor retail theft for stealing two cartons of cigarettes from a Hermitage store.
UChristopher Legas, 26, of Maple Terrace Drive, Grove City, was placed on one year's probation and fined $200 for felony criminal trespass and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to court documents, on April 21, he broke into a building in Grove City and damaged a door frame and some clothing. He also possessed a plastic bag used for storing a controlled substance.
URussell Vanderslice, 35, of McCracken Road, Greenville, was placed on one year's probation for possession of drug paraphernalia Feb. 25 at his home.
