Raccoon vaccinations
YOUNGSTOWN -- State officials will be baiting and vaccinating raccoons in the Mahoning Valley this month in an effort to prevent rabies.
Baiting is set to begin Monday and cover about 3,000 square miles on the eastern border of Ohio, including land in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
The Ohio Department of Health is asking residents not to touch the baits, which contain an oral vaccine, and to keep their pets inside or on leashes for at least a week so they will not eat the baits. The baits are brown, about 1 inch square and three-quarters of an inch tall, and contain a vaccine packet.
