Looking for help in fixingKirkmere drainage woes
EDITOR:
My basement has been flooded twice since the new concrete culverts were installed in Phase 1 of the Kirkmere project. The problem lies with the catch basins on my street. They resemble grates and are not large enough to accommodate the large amounts of water generated during the recent storms. I never had this problem before.
I've talked to Carmen Conglose Jr., and he tells me there should be no problem, however, I live here and see for myself. When these catch basins (sewers) were being installed, I questioned their size and was told the same thing.
My house on Normandy Drive sits at the bottom of Coral Sea, and when it rains, the catch basins have water flowing into them from two directions, and they simply cannot handle all the water, and as a result my front yard is under water and a river flows through to Bears Den Road.
Ryan Velt has been out to look at this problem, and he tells me MAYBE money could be taken out of the Phase 3 Kirkmere project to correct this problem. I am reluctant to leave my home when there is a forecast of thunderstorms, and this should not be.
I am asking for help on resolving this problem. Anything you might say or do would be greatly appreciated.

Working as a team willmake Youngstown great
EDITOR:
I would like to personally thank those individuals thinking of making Youngstown a better place to work and live by becoming a police officer. I did this job for 22 years (now retired) and can tell you that this line of work takes bravery, tenacity, talent, level-headedness, and much self sacrifice by the individual and immediate family.
When Robert Bush, Youngstown's current police chief, suggested that new officers come work for a great chief, it got me wondering. What made the department great when I worked there was not the chief nor even I as an individual. It was the department as a whole, all officers working together to make Youngstown a better place for all of us to live, work and raise families. All of us together made the police department a great asset to the community, not just one individual and certainly this wasn't done by the chief.
The current chief is a good chief of police to be sure, but to self-proclaim himself a great chief I think is a bit unrealistic and self-serving. Just like in football, a quarterback is only as good as the people that are assisting him, allowing him to take the bulk of the glory. The police department recruitment slogan should be "Come work with some of Youngstown's finest," because these officers that carry the brunt of society's problems truly are.

Might as well change nameto the Canfield Carnival
EDITOR:
It's time to pull the plug on the Canfield Fair. As a fair, it has outlived its usefulness. It makes a fine carnival, but as a fair for agriculture, it stinks. The 4H members are put in an out-of-the-way corner of the fairground, and the only people who know what they are doing are parents and neighbors.
Also the smaller county fairs (Shenango, Columbiana, Ashtabula, Geauga) treat their patrons like human beings, not herded like cattle. Other fairs fill their parking lots from front to back, with getting people close to the fair gates a priority.
Due to this year's mess, I'm encouraging everyone who asks to stay home next year. Avoid the hassle. There are other things besides the Canfield Carnival.
