BOARDMAN -- After a summer of undercover drug buys and surveillance, township police and federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested six people in a raid at the Terrace Motel on Market Street.
Capt. Jack Nichols, Boardman police, said officers went to the small motel at the northern end of the township Tuesday night with several search warrants and eight arrest warrants. Most of those for whom officers had obtained arrest warrants were not at the motel, but police found several others with outstanding warrants.
Arrested were:
UMotel manager Anthony Carcelli, 57, of Market Street, Boardman, on charges of drug trafficking.
UBrenda Snyder, 45, of Hillman Street, Youngstown, on an outstanding warrant for passing bad checks and driving under suspension. She was turned over to Youngstown police.
UJohn Patterson II, 43, who gave the motel as an address, on an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant in Austintown. He was turned over to Austintown police.
U John Patterson III, 17, who also gave the motel as an address, on charges of obstructing police business and resisting arrest.
UCharles Brewer, 43, of Dryden Avenue, Youngstown, on possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given a summons to appear in court.
ULisa Marchionda, 39, of Rockdale Avenue, Boardman, on possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia. She was given a summons to appear in court.
More arrests expected
Nichols said police expect to arrest, in the next few days, five other individuals who were not at the motel at the time of the raid, but for whom arrest warrants have been obtained.
He said the three-month investigation into the motel will likely result in additional arrests.
Nichols said township officials will make every effort to close the motel, but that must go through the courts first. He said finding fire and zoning violations in conjunction with any illegal activity at the motel could help in closing it.
"It was a disgrace inside. The ceiling was coming down in several rooms with water coming through the ceiling. Some of the rooms smelled strongly of urine. It was just a disgrace, really bad," he said.
Man's body found
On Sunday, authorities found the body of Thomas Haladay, 47, in one of the motel rooms. Nichols said police believe the man had been in the room for about three days before his body was discovered.
Nichols said there were no marks on the body and no signs of foul play. Police said Haladay, a drifter, often stayed at the motel. The report said his weekly rent was paid either by a local clergyman or Help Hotline.
A police report says the housekeeper last saw Haladay alive at 6 a.m. Friday. Police are awaiting a Mahoning County coroner's report on the cause of death.
Darren Crivelli, township zoning inspector, and Fire Chief James Dorman were on hand Tuesday to check for zoning and fire violations.
Crivelli said several property maintenance violations such as drainage problems, junk and debris, and rooms in disrepair were found. He said the motel owners will be cited with home-rule property maintenance violations by the end of the day.
