Volleyball teamfalls to Seton Hall
BUFFALO -- Senior Colleen Royer led three Penguins with at least 10 kills with a team-high 15, but the Youngstown State volleyball team dropped its 2003 season opener to Seton Hall, 25-30, 28-30, 23-30, on Friday at the Western New York Invitational.
In a second match the Penguins defeated Niagara 30-22, 29-31, 30-26, 30-22 to improve to 1-1 on the year.
Royer again led the Penguins with 21 kills, while Cari Leslie added 13 and Angie Pasquinelli had 40 assists.
The Penguins out-blocked the Pirates, 14-9, in the opener led by four from junior Melanie Pounders, but YSU also committed 14 service errors.
The tournament continues today.

New Castle raceris Tri-City winner
FRANKLIN, Pa. -- After a final review of points, Tri-City Speedway officials announced that Pro Stock racer Doug Iorio Sr. of New Castle, Pa., is the winner of the 2003 Coors Light Hard Charger Award.
Joining Iorio as champions this season were Rod George (NorthPointe Automotive Super Sprints), Del Rougeux Jr. (Schwab's Ford DIRT Modifieds), Brent Rhebergen (RE/MAX E Mods), Darrell Bossard (E.F. Rogers Plumbing & amp; Heating Pro Stocks) and Jeff Manners (Victory Lane Graphics Thundercars).
Points for the Coors Light Hard Charger Award were accumulated in each feature for the Super Sprints, DIRT Modifieds, E Mods, Pro Stocks and Thundercars. A driver earned one point for each position advanced in the final finishing order from that driver's official starting spot.
Iorio, who was the 1996 Pro Stock track champion, captured the title with 67 Hard Charger points, while runner-up Ben Blake, a fellow Pro Stock driver, scored 56 points.
Sharon Nationalsat Sharon Speedway
HARTFORD -- Sharon Speedway hosts the 23rd annual Sharon Nationals today and Sunday.
Tonight's action will include the BRP Modified Tour, a Mod-Lite race and a non-sanctioned 410 sprint race.
On Sunday, the Mod-Lites will return followed by a 100-lap Enduro race and a Demolition Derby.
Some of the best late-model racers in the country will compete in the Xtreme DirtCar series race Tuesday.
All seats for the Sharon Nationals will be general admission. Prices for tonight's events are $20 for adults 14 and older, $10 for kids 6-13 and free for children 5 and younger. On Sunday, all seats are $5, with children 5 and younger admitted for free.
Reserved seats for the Xtreme DirtCar series late model race are $27 for adults 14 and older and $14 for kids 3-13. General admission seats are $25 for adults 14 and older, $12 for kids 6 to 13, and free for children 5 and younger.
Gates open at 4 p.m., with hot laps beginning around 6 each night.

Pens name Bourqueas radio analyst
PITTSBURGH -- Phil Bourque, a member of both of Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup championship teams, has been named a radio analyst for the Penguins.
The team made the announcement Friday.
Bourque, a left winger, broke in with the Penguins in the 1983-84 season and was a member of Pittsburgh's championship teams in 1991 and 1992. He spent eight seasons with Pittsburgh.

* SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Candie Kung fought through another slow start and soggy conditions for a 4-under 68 Friday and widened her lead to four strokes halfway through the LPGA State Farm Classic.
Kung shook off two early bogeys and then held off charges from three players to finish 36 holes at 13 under at the Rail Golf Course.
* ALOHA, Ore. -- Tom Watson birdied four of the last five holes in a 10-under 62 that gave him a four-stroke lead after two rounds of the Jeld-Wen Tradition, the final major on the Champions Tour this season.
Watson, who won the British Senior Open last month, was a tournament-record 14-under 130 after 36 holes at the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club.
* NORTON, Mass. -- Justin Rose made five birdies from inside 3 feet, then capped off his first round with a 15-foot eagle from the fringe for an 8-under 63 and a two-stroke lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Vijay Singh and Cliff Kresge each had a 65 on the TPC of Boston.
* NORD-EICHENRIED, Germany -- Robert Karlsson had two eagles in an 8-under 64 and held a two-stroke lead halfway through the BMW Open.
Karlsson, who won this tournament in 1997, was at 15-under 129 after two rounds at the Nord-Eichenried course .
