WARREN -- While the gray clouds rolled gently across the sky releasing a downpour of rain, Warren Harding brought the thunder with force Friday in its 61-6 rout of Cleveland JFK.
After a 70-minute lightning delay, Harding hoped to remain focused.
"The coach did a good job of making us stay focused and keep the task at hand," senior Delbert Ferguson said.
Ferguson, an Ursuline transfer, saw his first action as a Raider. He spent most of his time as a blocker for Richard Davis, but in between throwing blocks, he managed to rush four times for 54 yards and one touchdown.
"I loved it," Ferguson said. "It was great. I was just happy to get out there and play with my teammates. I have been injured for a while, and I was just happy to get out there and play football."
Touchdown run
His touchdown was scored from 35 yards out as he shot up the middle, bounced outside to the right, threw a stiff arm in the facemask of a defender and ended it with a leap over the last defensive player into the corner of the end zone.
"There's a big difference [in football programs]," Ferguson said. "It's totally two different kinds of football."
Though Ferguson's return to the team was important, the play of Davis was even bigger for the Raiders' success.
Harding began the game by allowing Davis to carry for the first 10 plays from scrimmage. Over the course of those carries, Davis scored twice.
Davis leads way
Davis completed the game with 142 yards on 21 carries. He also crossed the goal line four times for the second straight week.
Cleveland JFK got on the board late into the game when junior Jerome Robinson took an outside route to the end zone for 16 yards. This was the first touchdown scored against the Raiders this year.
"I think we did great," Ferguson said. "The offensive line really dominated. We really couldn't throw that much because of the weather obviously, so the offense and defense really stepped it up."
