INDIANS Former Scrapper Durbin gets call-up to Cleveland
Chad Durbin played for Kansas City before undergoing elbow surgery last year.
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
CLEVELAND -- Chad Durbin joined the Indians on Friday, but he won't be activated until he starts on Tuesday against the Tigers.
With Jason Davis still nursing a sore shoulder and Brian Anderson having been traded to Kansas City, the Tribe's six-man rotation is two pitchers short.
Jason Stanford and Durbin will fill in. Stanford, who will start in Detroit on Monday, also has not been added to the roster, but he is here.
Durbin, 25, spent parts of four seasons with the Royals until encountering elbow problems. He underwent Tommy John surgery last September, and the Indians signed him early this year, giving him an opportunity to work his way back to the big leagues.
"There was a comfort level with this team," said Durbin, who spoke with several clubs before deciding on Cleveland. "When Mark Shapiro talked to me and my agent, he said, 'This year is not important. We're aiming for next season, so we think you should go slow.' "
Durbin made three starts at Akron, giving up two runs in 12 innings, before moving up to Buffalo. In 10 Triple-A starts, he was 3-6 with a 4.60 earned-run average. His last start was Thursday night, when he gave up two runs in seven innings.
"When I walked into the dugout after the seventh [Manager] Marty Brown wanted to talk to me," Durbin, who started the season with the Scrappers, said.
"I thought he was telling me it was my last start of the season. But he says, 'No, you're getting at least one more, in Cleveland. Congratulations.' "
Eric Wedge has read the reports on Durbin.
"He's shown a great changeup at times," Wedge said. "He also has good command of his fastball. He's come a long way in a short period of time. It's important we take a look at him."
Durbin doesn't pretend that his elbow is totally sound yet.
"I still get a bad arm day here and there," he said. "But overall, I feel pretty good. Some days, it feels pretty close [to his presurgery best]. Other times, it feels like I might be months away from that. But you just take things as they come."
