ST. LOUIS -- Darius Outlaw caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brad Smith with 4:12 remaining Saturday to give Missouri a 22-15 victory over Illinois in the season opener.
Missouri got another big game from Smith, a Chaney High graduate.
He went 12-for-18 for 101 yards and two touchdowns and added 66 yards rushing on 17 carries. In the opener against Illinois last year, Smith had 290 yards total offense in his first career start as a redshirt freshman.
Ibrahim Halsey had 139 yards on 20 carries, a school record for a season opener for Illinois. Jon Beutjer was 31-for-45 for 281 yards and a touchdown.
Illinois outgained Missouri 422-224, but missed a chance to tie it late, running out of downs at the Missouri 23 when Beutjer's pass went in and out of Melvin Bryant's arms at the 5.
Missouri struggled on offense most of the day. But the Tigers saved their best for late in the game with a 13-play, 79-yard game-winning drive. Smith added a 2-point conversion run from an unusual swinging gate alignment, winning a foot race to the right corner of the end zone.
Smith took the snap from the 8 on the play after a false start.
Smith was 3-for-4 for 40 yards on the winning drive. Outlaw caught two of the passes for 21 yards and Zack Abron caught a 19-yard swing pass and had a 17-yard run.
Missouri led 14-6 at the half despite getting outgained 167-103 in total yards.
Smith hit J.D. McCoy for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 14-3, capping Missouri's only sustained drive of the half.
No. 4 Michigan 45, Central Michigan 7
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Chris Perry ran for a career-high 232 yards and two touchdowns as No. 4 Michigan beat Central Michigan.
The Wolverines scored three TDs in the third quarter to turn the opener for both teams into a rout after leading 17-0 at halftime.
Perry, who had 22 carries, broke Michigan's rushing record for a season opener, which had been Gordon Bell's 210-yard performance against Wisconsin in 1975.
Michigan's John Navarre was 19-of-33 passing for 245 yards with two TDs and an interception.
Terrence Jackson led Central Michigan with 104 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Jeff Perry, whose college career has been set back by injuries, played for the first time since he was a California high school standout in 1999. Perry was 18-of-29 for 150 yards and an interception.
As positive as the final score looked for Michigan, the Wolverines appear to have the same concern they did a year ago: kicking.
Adam Finley missed a 25-yard field goal to the right on the first drive of the game, and was short on a 47-yard attempt at the end of the first half. Finley and two other Michigan kickers missed 12 of 24 field goals last season.
The Wolverines were without safety Marlin Jackson, the Big Ten preseason defensive player of the year. Jackson, a Sharon High graduate, was suspended by Carr for the game after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault earlier this month in a plea agreement.
Iowa 21, Miami (Ohio) 3
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Fred Russell ran for 161 yards and a touchdown and Nathan Chandler threw for two scores as Iowa beat Miami of Ohio.
The Hawkeyes also intercepted Ben Roethlisberger four times and beat the RedHawks for the third straight season.
Russell carried the ball 22 times and had long runs of 59 and 66 yards, both in the second half. Chandler, making his first career start, was 12-of-19 for 129 yards. He also ran for 24 yards.
Iowa's defense, which gave up 343 yards passing to Roethlisberger last year, was more aggressive and tighter in coverage Saturday. Iowa recorded four sacks, held Miami to 50 yards rushing and didn't give up a pass longer than 26 yards.
Roethlisberger finished 27-of-42 for 250 yards.
Michigan St. 26, W. Michigan 21
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Jeff Smoker returned from a five-game suspension for substance abuse to lead Michigan State.
Smoker flourished in new coach John L. Smith's spread offense, completing 21 of 34 passes for 324 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
He threw scoring passes of 59, 50, and 21 yards in a game that featured 84 throws and lasted 3 1/2 hours.
Chad Munson went 30-of-50 for 333 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in what also was the Broncos' season opener.
Connecticut 34, Indiana 10
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Dan Orlovsky threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns and Terry Caulley added a 43-yard scoring run Saturday as Connecticut opened its new 40,000-seat stadium with a 34-10 win over Indiana.
The Huskies extended their winning streak from last season to five games. Indiana, the first Big Ten school UConn has faced, is winless in its last seven games.
