DETROIT -- Frank Thomas and Carlos Lee homered Saturday as the Chicago White Sox handed the Detroit Tigers their 100th loss of the season with a 5-2 victory.
The Tigers (34-100) join the 1962 Mets as the only teams in the modern era to lose 100 games before September.
Mike Maroth (6-19) took the loss and is one defeat from becoming the first pitcher since Oakland's Brian Kingman in 1980 to lose 20 games in a season.
Maroth, who is expected to start again Thursday against Cleveland or Friday in Toronto, allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks in 61/3 innings.
Jon Garland (10-10) earned his second win in six August starts, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks in six-plus innings.
Three White Sox relievers finished, with Damaso Marte working 12/3 perfect innings and Tom Gordon getting the final two outs.
The White Sox took a 3-0 lead in the third. With two outs, Tony Graffanino doubled, Lee walked and Thomas lined his 38th homer into the left-field stands. Thomas has 10 homers in his last 12 games.
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom half on Danny Klassen's RBI single, but Jose Valentin's diving stop turned a possible run-scoring hit by Dmitri Young into an inning-ending double play.
Chicago loaded the bases with none out in the sixth, but Thomas ran through a stop sign and was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Ben Petrick on a shallow fly. Joe Crede then grounded into a forceout to end the inning.

Athletics 4, Devil Rays 2
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Ted Lilly took a one-hitter into the seventh inning as Oakland beat Tampa Bay for its season-high eighth straight win.
Lilly (8-9) retired 11 of his first 12 batters before allowing an infield single to Aubrey Huff in the fourth as the A's retained a two-game lead in the AL West and improved to a major league-best 19-9 in August.
Lilly gave up a run, three hits and struck out seven in 62/3 innings to improve to 3-1 over his last seven starts.
Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his AL-leading 37th save in 42 chances.
Eric Chavez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Scott Hatteberg hit his 11th homer for Oakland.
Rob Bell (3-3) retired 11 straight hitters after Chavez's two-run double in the third, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Devil Rays from losing to the A's for the 16th time in 18 games.
Lilly was nearly flawless until running into trouble with two outs in the seventh.
Adam Piatt's double in the seventh was a routine fly ball to left field that Terrence Long lost in the twilight sky. Travis Lee then hit an RBI single -- the hardest of the three hits Lilly allowed.
Bell was equal to the task despite snapping his three-game winning streak as he pitched 6 2-3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out one.
Bell had a troublesome inning in the third when he allowed singles to Mark Ellis and Hatteberg preceding Chavez's double.
In the seventh, he issued a one-out walk to Ramon Hernandez and left after Chris Singleton's RBI double one out later.
Marlon Anderson's sixth homer of the season, a pinch-hit solo shot off Chad Bradford leading off the eighth, brought Tampa Bay within a run at 3-2.
Hatteberg's solo homer off Lance Carter in the eighth made it 4-2.
The Devil Rays, who lead the majors in walks (549), wild pitches (60) and hit batters (77), recorded one of each against the A's.

Twins 2, Rangers 0
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Johan Santana pitched six shutout innings before leaving with a left hamstring injury, and Shannon Stewart drove in both runs.
Santana (9-3) allowed five hits to win his sixth straight decision. Santana, 8-2 in his 13 starts this season, struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
Santana went out to warm up for the seventh, but was favoring his left leg. He was replaced by Juan Rincon.
Rincon allowed one hit over 12/3 innings and LaTroy Hawkins registered the final out of the eighth, retiring Alex Rodriguez on a fly ball with a runner on second.
Eddie Guardado pitched a perfect ninth for his 31st save in 34 chances.
In the first, Santana was struck on the left thigh with a line drive by Texas' Mark Teixeira, but Santana remained in after a brief visit by manager Ron Gardenhire. A Twins spokesman said the hamstring problem was not related to the play.
The Twins and Kansas City Royals are a half-game behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.
Teixeira went 3-for-4 for the Rangers, who have lost five straight and eight of nine.
