AMERICAN LEAGUE Indians avoid sweep
The Tribe rallied in the ninth on two Toronto errors for a 5-4 win.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Toronto Blue Jays made a few defensive replacements in the ninth inning Sunday.
The moves paid off immediately -- for the Cleveland Indians.
Throwing errors by catcher Kevin Cash and first baseman Frank Catalanotto allowed two runs to score, helping the Indians win 5-4 and avoid a three-game sweep.
"As a defensive replacement, you want to go in and not be seen," Cash said. "Today, obviously, I was seen a little bit."
Throwing error started rally
With the Indians down 4-3, Tim Laker led off the ninth with a single. Jhonny Peralta laid down a bunt 2 feet in front of home plate that Cash threw into center field to put runners at second and third.
Pinch-hitter Matt Lawton hit a grounder to first that Catalanotto charged and threw past Cash, letting pinch-runner Angel Santos and Peralta score.
Catalanotto pinch-hit in the ninth for starting catcher Tom Wilson, then stayed in to play first base, replacing Josh Phelps. Cash replaced Wilson.
Catalanotto, who has started only two games at first this season, said he simply missed his target.
"I'm a big league player. I have to make those plays," he said. "We should have won the game. It's tough to be the reason when you lose."
Danys Baez (1-7) pitched an inning of scoreless relief for his first win in exactly a year.
Jason Kershner (0-3) gave up a hit and two unearned runs. He retired one batter in the eighth.
Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca refused to second-guess his ninth-inning moves.
"If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it the same way," Tosca said. "Baez is real tough on right-handed hitters, so I wanted to give Catalanotto a chance to swing the bat."
Catalanotto singled off Baez, but was stranded at second.
"Obviously, it's a tough way to lose a game," Tosca said.
Phelps puts Blue Jays ahead
The Blue Jays took a 4-3 lead on Phelps' two-run homer. His 15th of the season capped a three-run sixth inning that started with singles by Reed Johnson and Mike Bordick. Delgado also had an RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Alex Escobar hit a solo home run for Cleveland and Brandon Phillips got his first hit and RBI since he was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Buffalo.
Indians manager Eric Wedge said he wasn't pleased with the way his team played until the ninth.
Cleveland starter Billy Traber was pulled when he hit Bobby Kielty with a pitch after the homer by Phelps.
Toronto starter Mark Hendrickson went 41/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks. It was the eighth time Hendrickson has not made it out of the fifth inning.
Pete Walker pitched 31/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Blue Jays. He allowed just a hit and a walk.
Escobar hit his second homer of the season in the third, a line shot that a fan caught leaning over the railing of the 19-foot high wall in left field.
