Smoker breaks Michigan State records

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Jeff Smoker broke a pair of Michigan State career records -- total offense and passing yards -- in a 26-21 win over Western Michigan on Saturday.
The senior quarterback surpassed Ed Smith for the total offense record when he hooked up with Kyle Brown on a 59-yard touchdown pass to put the Spartans ahead 14-7 in the second quarter.
Smith, who quarterbacked Michigan State from 1976-1978, had 5,556 yards. Smoker came into Saturday's home opener needing 122 yards to break the record.
Smoker received a standing ovation from the 70,000 fans in attendance when the record was announced over the public address system.
In the fourth quarter, he supplanted Dave Yarema for the passing yardage mark with a 53-yard completion to Aaron Alexander.
Yarema, who played from 1982-1986, had 5,809 passing yards. Smoker came into the game needing 273 to set the mark.
Smoker completed 21-of-34 passes for 324 yards, three TDs and two interceptions against the Broncos.
Smoker returned to the field Saturday after he was kicked off the team with five games left last season. His family later announced he was seeking treatment for substance abuse.
Smoker returned to practice with no assurances of regaining the top spot, but eventually won over new coach John L. Smith. He was named the starter earlier this month, beating out Damon Dowdell and Drew Stanton.
