MAC FOOTBALL Hill overcomes turnovers to lead Marshall to victory
He had three interceptions and two fumbles in the 45-21 win over Hofstra.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Stan Hill overcame five turnovers to throw for 344 yards and two touchdowns Saturday as Marshall beat Division I-AA Hofstra, 45-21.
Earl Charles had two 5-yard touchdown runs in his debut for Marshall (1-0), which outgained Hofstra 608-241 but couldn't put the pesky Pride away until the fourth quarter.
Making his third career start -- and his first as the full-time replacement for Byron Leftwich -- Hill completed 25 of 37 passes, but also threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles.
Hofstra (0-1) made things interesting late after Hill's final giveaway. James Glee returned an interception 94 yards to the Marshall 1-yard line, and third-string quarterback Anton Clarkson's 10-yard touchdown pass to Devale Ellis pulled Hofstra to within 28-21 late in the third quarter.
But Marshall sealed it with scores on its next three possessions.
Hill scored on an 8-yard run to cap an eight-play, 68-yard drive; Nick Kelly kicked a 37-yard field goal; and Charles, a junior college transfer, added his second TD run of the game.
When Hill was clicking, he was brilliant. He had touchdown passes of 27 and 51 yards, and during one stretch he completed 10 straight throws.
Hill started two games last year after Leftwich injured his shin.
Darius Watts caught six passes for 122 yards with a touchdown in the first half, but had just one catch for no yards after halftime.
UNLV 28, Toledo 18
LAS VEGAS -- Kurt Nantkes threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Greg Estandia within 30 seconds of each other to rally UNLV to a win Friday over Toledo.
With 5:52 left, Nantkes found Estandia on fourth-and-seven to give the Rebels a 21-18 lead. After the Rockets fumbled on their next play from scrimmage, the pair hooked up again.
Nantkes found the tight end down the right sideline for a 22-yard completion to seal the win for UNLV.
Nantkes finished 27-of-41 for 308 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception. Estandia caught four passes for 75 yards.
