Cardinal Mooney routs St. Thomas; Ursuline falls late
Steubenville hit a late field goal to pull past Ursuline.
CANTON -- Mike Rich scored three touchdowns and Cardinal Mooney's defense recorded five sacks as the Cardinals cruised past St. Thomas Aquinas 35-10 Friday at Lowell Klinefelter Stadium.
Mooney senior Ron Stoops had two sacks on defense and added an 8-yard touchdown pass to Rich on offense.
Eric Mariotti carried 21 times for 119 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cardinals (2-0), while Rich added eight carries for 55 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Rick Solak, Dave Zidian and Anthony Childs each added a sack for Mooney, which also blocked two punts. Jim Berry had one of the blocks and Zidian added a 6-yard touchdown run.
Dennis Underwood led Aquinas (1-1) with 10 carries for 25 yards.
Steubenville 19, Ursuline 16
STEUBENVILLE -- Chris Ferroni kicked a 24-yard field goal with 1 minute, 43 seconds remaining to lift Steubenville.
The kick thwarted a second-half rally by the Irish.
Down 16-0 at halftime, Ursuline quarterback Daryll Clark threw touchdown passes of 43 and 40 yards to Walt Lacey.
His second strike enabled Ursuline to tie Steubenville 16-16 with 9:33 remaining.
Clark finished with 13 completions in 39 attempts for 203 yards and two interceptions.
The second interception came with 34 seconds remaining as Clark tried to rally the Irish for a win.
The Big Red (2-0) built a 16-0 lead by halftime as Michael Abbot returned a blocked punt 9 yards for a TD, Chad Bauman caught a 12-yard TD strike from Steve Repella and Steubenville added two points on a safety.
