Woman pleads guilty
WARREN -- A former secretary for a local attorney pleaded guilty in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Thursday to one count of theft. Terri McVicker, no age or address available, was accused of taking $68,000 from the law office of Atty. Don Guarnieri, where she worked about two years.
She will be sentenced after a background check.
McKinley site's new hours
NILES -- The McKinley Birthplace Home and Research Center, 40 S. Main St., will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Labor Day, and then on weekends only beginning Sept. 6.

'The Spirit of America Marches On' parade
NILES -- Pierrette M. Talley, secretary-treasurer of the Ohio AFL-CIO, will serve as grand marshal for the city's 13th annual Labor Community Parade Sept. 6.
Marching bands, floats, clubs and more will line up at 8 a.m. on Dragon Drive near McKinley High School, and the parade steps off at 10 a.m.
The theme is "The Spirit of America Marches On."

YSU students arrestedon alcohol charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown State University students seen walking near Fifth Avenue were arrested Thursday evening by campus police on charges of underage possession of alcohol, and both were issued citations charging them with having an open container. Christopher K. Dorris, 19, of Newton Falls Road, Ravenna, and Zachary T. Hall, 20, of Ravine Run, Cortland, will be referred to the student disciplinary board, police said.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Applications for jobs with the Youngstown Police Department are available through Sept. 12 at the civil service commission office on the seventh floor of city hall at 26 S. Phelps St.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Lt. Robin Lees, YPD spokesman, said a civil service test will be given Sept. 20 at Choffin Career Center, not Sept. 18 as previously reported.
The department wants to hire 20 officers over the next two years.
Beginning salary is about $32,000.
Sharon man arrestedin attempted robbery
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested Terry L. Hall, 54, who police think lives on Fourth Avenue, after he was accused of trying to rob another man at knifepoint at the Sheetz convenience store at Oakland Avenue and East State Street about 1:30 a.m. today.
Police said Hall approached a city man sitting in a van in front of the store and pulled out a large knife, demanding the man's wallet and threatening to kill him.
When the man refused to cooperate, Hall tried to stab him but only cut the man's hand.
At that point, the man's mother walked out of the store, and Hall started moving toward her, police said, prompting the man to put his van in gear and ram into Hall, knocking him down.
Hall wasn't injured, and he faced arraignment today on charges of robbery, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Suspect arrested in June 2002 assault
SHARON, Pa. -- A man sought by police for a June 2002 assault that cost a city man an eye has been arrested in Florida.
Willie Phillips, 35, whose last known address was on Florence Street in Sharon, was picked up a week ago in Fort Lauderdale on a fugitive warrant from Sharon police. Phillips has been returned to Mercer County to face charges of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and simple assault. He was in the Mercer County today, awaiting arraignment.
Police said he is accused of attacking a North Street man June 30, 2002, punching him once in the left eye.
The victim's eye was destroyed and had to be removed by surgeons, police said.
Inmate assaults counselor
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 46-year-old counselor at the Youth Development Center in Shenango Township was assaulted by an inmate. Pennsylvania State Police said a 17-year-old boy became violent when confronted about a previous discipline problem. Police said the boy pushed the worker over a desk and chair, choked him and punched him several times in the chest and head at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The victim was treated at a local hospital for cuts and bruises.
The 17-year-old was charged in juvenile court with simple assault and harassment.
