NOTEBOOK | From Cleveland Browns Stadium
History lesson: The Browns have finished 1-3 in the preseason nine other times, including the 1980 "Kardiac Kids" season, when they went 11-5. They have only gone winless once in the preseason. They went 0-6 in 1972, but rebounded to go 10-4 in the regular season and make the playoffs. The Falcons (0-4) were the only team in the NFL to make the playoffs last season and not win a preseason game.Roster moves: Cleveland claimed tight end Keith Heinrich off waivers from Carolina and released long snapper Bryan Pittman. Heinrich was the Panthers' sixth-round draft pick out of Sam Houston State, where he was a Division I-AA All-American. Cleveland, which has a current roster of 70 players, must get must get down to 53 by Sunday. "The toughest part is you get close to these guys," Browns coach Butch Davis said. "They've strained their guts. They've desperately wanted to be a member of the Cleveland Browns. For a lot of guys, it will end positively. We'll have to let a few players go tomorrow, but you never say never in this business."One to watch: One player who has made a strong case to make the team is undrafted free agent wideout C.J. Jones, who had four receptions for 64 yards in Thursday's game. He entered the game with 397 all-purpose yards in the preseason -- best in the NFL.Injury report: Browns lineman Ross Verba injured his right arm during the first quarter and did not play the rest of the game. X-rays were negative and Verba is expected to play in the Sept. 7 opener.Attendance: The Browns distributed 69,618 tickets for Thursday's game, although the crowd was probably closer to 50,000. The Browns play host to Indianapolis in the regular season opener on Sept. 7. That game is a sellout.
