YOUNGSTOWN Man gets 25-years-to-life sentence for murder and aggravated robbery
The victim's spouse said she will never forget what she saw.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man has been sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison for running over and killing an elderly man.
Judge James C. Evans imposed the sentence Monday on Michael Hogan, 38, of Boardman. On Friday, a jury found Hogan guilty of murder and aggravated robbery.
Hogan was sentenced to 15 years to life on the murder charge and 10 years in prison on the robbery charge.
Assistant prosecutor Jeffrey Limbian said that should work out to a minimum of 25 years in prison for Hogan.
Judge Evans he had no choice about the murder sentence because of mandatory sentencing laws. The judge said he made the robbery sentence consecutive to the murder charge to protect the public. The judge said Hogan had a criminal record as an adult and a juvenile.
Judge Evans also noted that Hogan was out on bond on a charge of cocaine possession when the murder occurred.
What happened
John Ruble Sr. 71, of Struthers, died of multiple injuries May 31, 2002. He was injured while trying to grab the purse of his wife, Louise, who was present, from a car that was driving away from a recycling site in Boardman. The purse contained $37 and a credit card.
Limbian told Judge Evans that Hogan could have escaped by driving around Ruble, but instead ran him over with a Cadillac.
Before the sentencing, Louise Ruble said in court that Hogan was "a man of no emotion."
Mrs. Ruble said she hoped she would get over her loss but said she would never forget what she saw.
"How would you like it if that happened to your family?" she asked.
In a statement before sentencing, Hogan said he could understand the family's pain.
But, he said, "I haven't had remorse because I didn't commit the crime."
The defense had argued Hogan was home asleep at the time and that the investigation into the killing was sloppy.
