Girard driver killed
HUBBARD -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash in Hubbard Township that killed Kirt A. Baker, 32, of Girard.
The patrol said Baker was driving east on U.S. Route 62 around 10:40 p.m. Saturday and failed to stop at the stop sign at state Route 7.
Baker's vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Benjamin B. Heater, 57, of Wooster.
No other details were available this morning.
Robbery attempt fails
NILES -- A glass door was broken and a gas station clerk suffered minor injuries after scuffling with a man who tried to rob him.
The clerk told police he was in the back of the Shell gas station at U.S. Route 422 and Old Forge Lane around 7:15 a.m. Saturday when a white male between 35 and 40 with a medium build and short, black hair entered and yelled, "Give me your money."
The clerk began wrestling with the man and they broke the door as they fell to the floor, reports said. The robber, who was wearing a gray sweat shirt and black shorts, fled empty-handed.
2nd Ward meeting
WARREN -- Councilman Alford L. Novak, D-2nd, will conduct a ward meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Packard Park Shelter House.
The charter form of government petition drive will be the meeting's topic.
Earlier this year, council members rejected legislation to get the charter question on the November ballot.
Some residents have launched a petition drive to get the issue on the March 2004 ballot.
Hall of fame nominations
WARREN -- Warren High Schools' Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame is taking nominations for new inductees.
The next class will be inducted in May. Honorees will be graduates of Warren, Warren Western Reserve or Warren G. Harding high schools.
Nominees must be out of school at least 12 years. The selection committee will choose from three to 10 inductees.
Selections will be based on nominations and information received from friends, families and the nominees.
Applications must be returned to the committee at the board of education office, 261 Monroe St. N.W., or faxed to (330) 841-2434 by Nov. 16.
All about grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is taking reservations for a grant center cybertour at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 and a grant center basic orientation at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 8, both at the main library, 305 Wick Ave.
Both programs are free and open to representatives of nonprofit organizations seeking information on funding sources and fund raising.

Jailed on drug charges
SHARON, Pa. -- Leroy Anderson Jr., 63, of South Oakland Avenue remained in Mercer County jail today after failing to post $5,000 bond after his arrest on drug charges. Anderson was picked up in the 800 block of Spearman Avenue around 9 p.m. Saturday on a warrant charging him with possession and sale of crack cocaine.
He is accused of selling the drug to an undercover agent Thursday. Police said they found another rock of suspected crack and drug paraphernalia on Anderson when he was arrested.
