HE YMCA OF YOUNGSTOWN says it is continuing to invest in its downtown central branch with an aggressive program of building improvements, fitness equipment additions and technology upgrades.
The program began 10 years ago as part of a long-term plan for the organization's main building.
"Since January of this year, we have invested over $200,000 in this facility," said Ken Rudge, chief executive officer.
Speculation about future
"With the recent opening of our new Davis Family YMCA in Boardman, there was a great deal of speculation as to the future of the downtown Y," Rudge said. "This level of investment shows that we are committed to the central branch and we are committed to downtown Youngstown."
He said improvements have included a $30,000 renovation of the elevator system, $26,000 in telecommunications upgrades, $28,000 in air-conditioning improvements, and a $12,000 addition to the weight room and cardio-cybex center.
A $30,000 upgrade of the racquetball/handball courts is scheduled to begin. Also, an estimated $25,000 has been spent on other building repairs and improvements.
Originally built in 1915, the 120,000-square-foot downtown facility includes two swimming pools, three gymnasiums, fitness facilities and weight rooms, racquetball/handball courts and an indoor track, as well as a spinning center, youth center and community rooms.
The building is also the site of the YMCA Youngstown's corporate and business office as well as the main office for its Camp Fitch branch on Lake Erie.
The downtown facility currently serves more than 8,000 members as well as an additional 33,000 participants in its youth sports leagues and many programs throughout the year.
