RAY SWANSON Stone nearing record for wins

Bob Stone of Greenville High School could be the winningest football coach in Mercer County history.
Last weekend, the Trojans romped over Mercer to nail down Stone's 208th career victory, a win that tied former Sharon High coach Jim Wildman for the record. Wildman is retired.
Stone missed an opportunity Friday night when Greenville lost to Sharon, 26-8.
And by the way, there are some new faces in the title chases of Mercer County football this season. Hickory owns the Class AAA crown, Slippery Rock is the Class AA titleholder and the Big Reds of West Middlesex are the Class A representative.
Good luck to all of our county teams as they gear up for District 10 combat.
The run is on
A jaunt to Lake Erie last weekend proved very fruitful as far as the fishing season goes.
Steelhead have begun their annual journey up the tributaries of the lake and fishermen are wetting their lines. We saw a number of heavy stringers and even witnessed the cleaning of several beauties at bait shops in the area.
The favorite hot spots are Walnut Creek, Elk Creek and Trout Run. The marina at Trout Run has always been one of our top spots, however, it is not open this year. Some reports say that it could open at a later date. Some of the fish we observed were in the 6- and 7-pound categories.
Congratulations
The mark of a good team is its ability to win the close ones.
Coach Andy Howat's Grove City High School Eagles displayed that trait recently in wrapping up the 2003 Mercer County Athletic Conference girls soccer championship.
The Eagles defeated Wilmington, 3-2, and earlier ground out a spine-tingling 1-0 double-overtime victory over Slippery Rock.
The Eagles will make their initial start in the District 10 playoffs on Wednesday.
Matune second
