JOHN KOVACH | Colleges Kohl is Walsh's Female Athlete of the Year
NORTH CANTON -- Shannon Kohl, who completed an outstanding softball career at Walsh University this past spring, will be honored as the school's 2003 Female Athlete of the Year during halftime of the Cavaliers-Gannon football game next Saturday at Canton's Fawcett Stadium at 11 a.m.
Kohl, a multi-talented center-fielder from Austintown Fitch High and a left-handed hitter, batted a school-record .485 in 51 games in her senior season to lead Walsh to a 39-18 record, and to its second appearance in the NAIA National Championships.
Kohl, a sociology major, also led the Cavaliers in runs scored (51), hits (81), on-base percentage (.489), slugging percentage (.701) and stolen bases (16), and drove in 32 runs with 10 doubles, seven triples and four home runs.
She was named to the NAIA All-American First Team.
Kohl ranks No. 1 in school history in four career statistical categories: batting average (.450), hits (276), runs scored (163) and triples (16, tied).
She held the previous school record for batting average with a .468 mark as a sophomore.
In the opening game of the 2003 NAIA playoffs, Kohl went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead Walsh to a 4-1 win over Marian (Ind).
In the final NAIA tournament game, she slammed a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for Walsh's only run in a 5-1 loss to Athens State.
She finished the tournament 4-for-11 for .364.
Theofilos still kicking
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- George Theofilos, a senior placekicker for the John Carroll University football team from Howland High, ranks No. 3 on the team in scoring with 24 points through six games (4-2 record).
Theofilos is 18-for-19 in extra points and 2-for-3 in field goals, including a 24-yard connection in the Blue Streaks' 34-16 loss to Mount Union on Oct. 18.
Last year, Theofilos scored 39 points on 3-for-6 in field goals and 30-for-35 in extra points, including a school-record 10 in a row in a 73-0 romp past Otterbein.
Two weeks before that, he tied the school record with eight straight extra points in a 59-21 win over Heidelberg.
Scarbrough aids B-W
BEREA -- Chuck Scarbrough, a junior on the Baldwin-Wallace College golf team from Howland High, recently completed his third fall season with an 81.25 average for four rounds in two tournaments.
His low round was 77 in the second round of the Otterbein Invitational at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Westerville.
Scarbrough played in only one tournament last spring at the Kenyon College Invitational, carding an 86.
In the fall 2002 season, he played in four tournaments and averaged 77.33 for 7.5 rounds.
For Scarbrough's B-W career, he is averaging 82.06 for eight tournaments and 15.5 total rounds.
He is the son of Sally and Charles Scarbrough.
Jones helps Malone
CANTON -- Scotty Jones, a freshman golfer for Malone College from East Palestine High, helped the Pioneers place second in the National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament held in Panama City, Fla., just one stroke behind The Master's College with 599 to 600.
Jones carded 72-80--152 to tie freshman Grant Gates (76-76--152) for 10th overall and second-best on the team.
Junior Keith Cunningham led Malone and was third overall with 73-73--146.
Tressel-to-Prosenjak card
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Prosenjak of Youngstown, a former Ohio State baseball player and a retired area teacher and coach, and a member of the Curbstone Coaches, is recuperating at home following a recent illness.
Prosenjak, who will be 90 Dec. 15, recently received a happy 90th birthday note from Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel, who also thanked Prosenjak for his support of the football team.
Prosenjak is a longtime OSU football fan who has had season tickets for years.
Prosenjak played baseball for Ohio State from 1933-35, and won letters all three years. He still holds the school record for consecutive times reaching base with 13 in 1934, and is so credited with that feat in the OSU baseball record books.
