SAFETY TIPS Fire and Halloween

More than 100 people die each year from their clothing becoming ignited by fire. Fires that result from decorations for special events have accounted for millions of dollars in lost or damaged property. Being vigilant and keeping safety in mind will help make this year's festivities fun and injury-free.
Buy only costumes that are flame-retardant or flame-resistant. If you are creating your own costume, choose materials that will not ignite easily. Avoid long flowing gowns or loose-fitting garments that may accidentally catch fire if near an open flame or jack-o-lantern. Wear bright-colored clothing when traveling outdoors at night.
Teach children how to "stop, drop and roll." Practice before trick-or-treating.
Have children use flashlights to shine their way through their travels. The lights can be seen by motorists. Also, trips and falls can ruin a fun evening.
Do not use torches or candles to light paths or sidewalks. Trick-or-treaters may bump into the lighting. Avoid using open flames or devices that produce high heat near dried leaves, flowers or corn stalks.
USE CAUTION when decorating with candles. Always supervise children around lit candles. Never let children use matches or lighters. When using candles to illuminate jack-o-lanterns, use long fireplace matches to light the candle inside. Make sure the pumpkin is on a stable surface and that it is far away from any combustible items.
