LIBERTY Zionist group to honor couple



The Kantermans are known for their joint leadership.
LIBERTY -- The Youngstown Zionist District will honor Dr. Leonard and Susan Kanterman at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at Congregation Temple El Emeth, 3970 Loganway, for their lifetime devotion to Israel, Zionism and community service in the Youngstown-Warren area.
The Kantermans will receive the Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award and the K'Far Silver Scholarship Plaque.
Susan Smith Kanterman is a first generation American, born and raised in Passaic, N.J. She received her bachelor of arts degree in social work from Rutgers University. She married Dr. Kanterman in 1974, and worked in actuarial research in New York and Washington, D.C., before moving to Warren, with her husband and children in 1984.
Raised in Livingston, N.J., Dr. Kanterman graduated from Bucknell University and received his medical degree from State University of New York-Downstate in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dr. Kanterman completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, He then served in the army at Fort Riley, Kansas, before moving to Warren to join the Trumbull Mahoning Medical Group.
The Kantermans have been very involved in communal affairs.
Accomplishments
Susan has served as an active member of the sisterhoods of Beth Israel Temple Center in Warren, Temple El Emeth and Children of Israel, both in Liberty.
She was involved in the creation of the Altshuler Akiva Academy and its early years of operation. She continued her own spiritual growth by celebrating her adult bat mitzvah in 1986. She served on the Jewish Community Center board from 1987 to 1996 and received the new Leadership Award from the Jewish Welfare Board in 1990. She also served as president of Jewish Family Services from 1998 to 2000.
Her other leadership roles for the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation including chairing the special events committee, the JCC Art Fair and the women's event. She received the Abe Harshman Young Leadership award in 1992. A life member of Hadassah, Susan served as president of the Warren Chapter.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Kanterman has served for the past five years as president and CEO of the Trumbull Mahoning Medical Group. Dr. Kanterman was an active member of the board of directors of Beth Israel Temple Center in Warren, serving as its president. He has also served on the boards of Temple El Emeth, the Altshuler Akiva Academy and the Commission for Jewish Education.
The physician has had many leadership roles for the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, serving as campaign chair and as an officer of the federation board of directors and its executive committee. He received the Abe Harshman Young Leadership Award in 1994 and is currently president of the philanthropic planning board. Having served as chair for many years of Israel Bonds in Warren, he has recently assumed that role at Temple El Emeth.
Working together
The Kantermans are known for their joint leadership such as their co-chairing of the Super Sunday Federation Fundraiser. Of special significance was their leadership of two Federation Israel missions; the 1992 Young Leadership Mission and a community mission in 1996.
The Kantermans are the parents of Paul, 24, of Cleveland, and Jill, 21, a student at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
