HELOISE Highlighter keeps track of subscriptions
Dear Heloise: My husband and I both subscribe to numerous magazines and periodicals. Since the publishers send out so many renewal notices, it's sometimes hard to remember which ones have been renewed and which have not.
Now when I write a check for a magazine renewal, I highlight that checkbook entry with a certain-color highlighter. A quick flip through the checkbook lets me see which magazines have been renewed -- and I can toss those numerous reminder notices immediately! Denise Hicks, Rentz, Ga.
Sometimes magazines send out renewal reminders when you still have plenty of time left on your current subscription. You can always call the free phone number for subscription service, too, and ask someone there when your subscription runs out.
Did you know that if you are allergic to scent strips in a magazine, you can call customer service to find out if it has a "scent-free" mailing list? Many do. Heloise
Dear Heloise: I have found little purse and travel-size water spritzers to be wonderful in a variety of situations:
They're refreshing on long plane flights: Spritzing your face counteracts the dry, dehydrating cabin air.
When you get into a hot car, you can spritz yourself and the kids. It makes the air conditioning seem to work twice as fast! (Be sure to carry it with you in your purse. Don't leave any spray container in a hot car, even if it only contains water.)
They're great for anyone suffering hot flashes: instantly cooling, even in the middle of the night. You can keep one beside the bed. A Dallas Reader
Dear Heloise: I bought a home leg-waxing kit. It comes with wax strips covered in plastic. The directions tell you to warm each strip by rubbing it between your hands until it's warm. This can take a long time.
Instead, I wrap it around a hot cup of coffee, and it's warmed up in a jiffy. Just the right temperature, too! Plus, I enjoy my coffee while using them. Barb in Lakeville, New Brunswick, Canada
FYI: Have you ever had a spill on a carpet and rushed around trying to find the spot remover? Well, here's how to solve the problem: Fill a small spray bottle with some spot remover and store it with your vacuum cleaner. When you see a spot, you know right where the cleaner is. Be sure to label and store the container where it can't be reached by children or pets.
Dear Heloise: Why do all manufacturers sew pockets on clothing shut? One can't always tell where to cut the thread to open the pocket -- whereas if it was tacked shut in the top center, it would be sufficient. Eunice in Fort Wayne, Ind.
