NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Get into the spirit of the season at a Halloween organ concert, featuring "The Ghost of Hannibal Lecter," at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Westminster College Orr Auditorium. Students will be in costume as they perform scary music by Dupre, Bach, Buxtehude and more, with sound and special effects to add to the atmosphere. Admission is free.
Silent movies in Cleveland
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, formerly known as Cleveland Cinematheque, will welcome Alloy Orchestra of Boston on Saturday. Alloy will add music and sound effects to two silent movies -- "The Black Pirate," starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr., at 7 p.m.; and "The General," starring Buster Keaton, at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $7 for kids ages 12 and under. Dana groups to perform
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christmas carols, spirituals and folk songs will be performed by Youngstown State University Dana Chorale and University Chorus at noon Nov. 5 in Butler Institute of Art, 524 Wick Ave. This free concert in the "Music at Noon" series will be led by Hae-Jong Lee, director of choral activities at YSU's Dana School of Music. Members of the student groups also will sing the Gloria from Monteverdi's "Mass for Four Voices."
Dana alumnus composition
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- YSU Dana School of Music alumnus Jason Howard wrote "Short No. 1: Fanfares and Waltzes," a composition that will be performed by Greenville Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Nov. 8 in Thiel College Passavant Center. Howard plays cello with the Greenville ensemble as well as Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Warren Philharmonic Orchestra and Ashtabula Area Orchestra. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music at YSU and is working toward a doctoral degree in theory and composition at Kent State University. Greenville Symphony Orchestra commissioned Howard to write this piece for its 75th anniversary celebration.
Classical guitar concert
CANFIELD -- Classical guitarist James Kalal, who taught at YSU's Dana School of Music, Mount Union College in Alliance and Hiram College, will perform at 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road. Kalal focuses on classical, Renaissance and flamenco guitar, but he also plays rock and Dixieland music. He's recorded a number of Christmas CDs and performs frequently throughout Northeast Ohio. This concert is sponsored by Ursuline School of Music and Youngstown Music Teachers Association. Tickets, which are $15 for adults and $5 for students, are available now at Ursuline Center and will be sold at the door.
Church to host dancers
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Ansambl Karavan Dancers will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a concert at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 in Holy Cross Romanian Orthodox Church, Maple Drive. Ansambl Karavan will pay homage to its host church and Continental Tamburitzans, an international troupe that had performed here, with its version of a Romanian number that hasn't been seen in nearly 20 years. The performers also will present dances from Hungary and the Hutzul and Poltava regions of the Ukraine. Guest performers will be Orkestra Braca, a Serbian tamburitzan quintet.
