Cooking causes firein two-story house
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Unattended cooking was the cause of a Friday afternoon fire in a two-story frame house at 118 Hickory St., according to Edwin Getway, assistant fire chief. The occupants left the house for about 10 minutes, leaving a pot on the stove, and when they returned, the kitchen was on fire and they called the fire department, he said. By the time firefighters arrived, the kitchen was engulfed and the fire extended to the second floor, he added. The loss estimate in the 3:30 p.m. blaze is undetermined, but the house was heavily damaged by fire, heat and smoke, Getway said. The house is owned by Steve Kondos, and occupied by him, his wife, Andrea, and their children, Adam, 14, and Kaylee, 5. About 30 firefighters were at the scene from the Sharpsville, Hermitage and South Pymatuning departments. There were no injuries.
