MOUNT UNION (6-0, 5-0 OAC)vs. CAPITAL (6-0, 5-0)
When: 1:30 p.m.
Where: Mount Union Stadium, Alliance.
Last year: Mount Union 38, Capital 22.
Scouting report: Mount Union is coming off a 34-16 win over John Carroll, while Capital rolled past Heidelberg, 56-10. The Purple Raiders and Crusaders will battle for sole possession of first place in the OAC. Mount Union holds a 25-12 advantage in the series against Capital, and has won the last 15 games. MUC has won 90 straight regular season games and 81 consecutive OAC outings. In MUC's win over John Carroll, senior FB Brian Miller caught two TD pass, while senior S Matt Caponi returned an interception 42 yards for a score. Also, junior QB Zac Bruney passed for 227 yards on 15-for-24. Leading the defensive charge was senior LB Shaun Spisak with tackles.
GROVE CITY (2-4, 2-2 PAC)vs. WESTMINSTER (3-3, 2-1)
When: 1 p.m.
Where: Harold Burry Stadium.
Last year: Westminster 19, Grove City 7.
Scouting report: Grove City was defeated by Waynesburg last week, 45-10, while Westminster edged Thiel, 14-13. The Titans hold a 44-31-8 advantage in the series against Grove City, and have won the last five meetings. Against Waynesburg, Dave DiDonato caught five passes to boost his season total to 34. He has four TD receptions. QB Sam Mowrey exceeded the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season. LB Mike Choby and SS Greg Grupp each had 10 tackles while FS Ross Trimmer (West Middlesex) had nine stops. Against Thiel, Westminster junior RB Scott Froelich scored both TDs but was limited to a season-low 48 yards rushing. Junior S Kevin Kresinski had a 97-yard interception return to set up the Titans' last touchdown. Junior QB Joe Getsy (Lowellville) was 5-for-13 for 61 yards, and senior WR Brian Ekis (Boardman) caught three passes for 52 yards. Ekis was named Offensive Titan of the Week. Junior OLB Jerry Bonenberger had 14 tackles and a sack and was named Defensive Titan of the Week. Junior DT Tony Ventresco (Boardman) had 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. Junior DE Sean Diefenderfer (Austintown Fitch) was named Special Teams Titan of the Week. Freshman Kyle Trimble (Western Reserve) averaged 31.4 yards on 10 punts. Senior S Mike Cubellis (Neshannock) had an interception.
BETHANY (0-7, 0-4 PAC) vs. THIEL (1-5, 0-4)
When: 1:30 p.m.
Where: Alumni Stadium, Greenville, Pa.
Last year: Bethany 31, Thiel 9.
Scouting report: Bethany lost to Washington & amp; Jefferson last week, 38-3. The Tomcats lead the series against Bethany, 30-27-1, but have lost the last 11 encounters. Thiel missed a chance to win the game against Westminster when PK Paul Stibich tried a 47-yard FG with 18 seconds remaining but the ball hit the crossbar. Sophomore TB Darious Thompson enjoyed his best rushing game of the season for Thiel with 92 yards in 23 carries. Senior TB Justin Napotnik (Sharpsville) rushed for 67 yards in 13 attempts for a 5.2-yard average. Sophomore RB John Dziurzynski scored his first TD on a 1-yard plunge. Sophomore DE Jonathan Howson led the Tomcats' defense with eight tackles, four of them for losses. Junior DE George Kum-nji had two sacks. Sophomore QB Mike Lindenfelster completed 12 of 25 passes for 110 yards.
HIRAM (0-6, 0-3 NCAC)vs. KENYON
When: 1 p.m.
Where: Charles A. Henry Field, Hiram.
Last year: Kenyon 22, Hiram 10
Scouting report: Hiram lost to Wittenberg, while Kenyon lost to Oberlin, 9-6. Hiram's passing attack, that had a streak of five straight games with at least 200 yards, was held to 89 yards. But Hiram got a strong defensive performance from DE Mike Sliter with a career-high 12 tackles, including six solo stops. Junior DT Dan Murphy had a career-high 11 tackles. Freshman John Papacostas returned four kickoffs for 76 yards to give him 524 return yards this season. He is just 11 yards short of Brian Gecina's school-record 601 yards set in 1993. Papacostas already has broken the single-game record with 144 return yards in the season opener at Grove City. Freshman receiver Jameel Mutawakkil caught four passes for 30 yards to surpass the 400-yard mark, and he now has 402 yards in 27 catches.
ALLEGHENY (3-3, 3-0 NCAC)vs. DENISON (2-4, 1-1)
When: 1 p.m.
Where: Robertson Field, Meadville, Pa.
Last year: Allegheny 50, Denison 16.
Scouting report: Allegheny defeated Wooster, 26-0 for its third straight NCAC win. Denison is coming off a 28-17 win over Earlham. Allegheny holds a 16-3 advantage in the series, winning the last 16 games. Mike Soltis, Allegheny's senior DT, registered a career-high three sacks and was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Week. Soltis had three solo tackles and five assists, and had 3.5 tackles for losses. Senior QB Bubba Smith completed 10-of-18 for 195 yards and three touchdowns, setting the school career record for passing attempts with 690. He also neared two more school career records with 47 TD passes, one off the mark; and 383 completions, six off the record. He also ranks second in passing yards (4,717) and total offense (5,011). Senior Jon Turner caught a team-high four passes for 36 yards against Wooster, and ranks No. 1 in career receptions (137). He also climbed to No. 2 in career receiving yards (1,676), and is tied for No. 1 in career TD receptions (18).
WALSH (6-1, 3-0 MSFA MIDEAST)vs. GENEVA (4-2, 2-1)
When: 6:30 p.m.
Where: Fawcett Stadium, Canton.
Last year: Walsh 31, Geneva 7
Scouting report: Walsh posted its fourth straight win, 40-0 over Taylor. The Cavaliers held Taylor to just 72 yards of total offense, including minus-6 yards rushing. Geneva defeated Quincy 52-28. Geneva leads the series with Walsh at 6-2, but the Cavaliers have won the last two games. Against Taylor, Walsh senior Derek Besgrove rushed for 188 yards and two TDs, while sophomore QB Dan Kane was 14-of-21 for 220 yards and two TDs. Senior Chris Brink caught two TD passes. WR Adam Copeland caught eight passes for 91 yards. Besgrove has rushed for 1,317 yards and scored 20 TDs this season. Junior OLB Matt Beebe led the defense with nine tackles, four for losses, and two sacks. In Geneva's win over Quincy, QB Ben Swallow (West Branch) completed 12-of-22 for 235 yards and two TDs. Swallow has thrown for 928 yards and seven TDs this season. WR Matt Nowaczynski has 36 catches for 475 yards and six TDs.
MALONE (2-4, 0-2 MSFA MIDEAST)vs. URBANA (2-5, 1-1)
When: 1:30 p.m.
Where: Wood Street Stadium, Urbana.
Last year: Malone 52, Urbana 10.
Scouting report: Malone defeated Thomas More last Saturday, 14-6, while Urbana lost to St. Francis (Ind.), 38-23. Malone set a school record with 14 sacks. Junior DB Mitch Fusek (Canfield) had three sacks, while junior DB Mike Swanson (East Liverpool), senior LB Ben Carnifax, junior DL Nathan Dreher and sophomore DL Brian Landies had two each. Swanson also returned an interception 41 yards for a TD and had nine tackles and a pass breakup. Carnifax led the team in tackles with 11, including four tackles for losses, and had an interception. Fusek and senior LB Jason Kennedy each had nine tackles, Fusek getting three for losses; and he also had two interceptions. Freshman DB Jordan Phillips (United) forced a fumble while junior DB Matt Kimmich recovered a fumble. Sophomore RB Sean Knight scored Malone's other TD on an 18-yard run, and rushed for 107 yards in 24 carries. Junior Jerry Rininger kicked both extra points and averaged 36 yards on nine punts.
SLIPPERY ROCK (3-4, 1-1 PSAC WEST)vs. EDINBORO (5-2, 2-1)
When: 1 p.m.
Where: Sox Harrison Stadium, Edinboro, Pa.
Last year: Slippery Rock 7, Edinboro 3.
Scouting report: Slippery Rock won last Saturday over Millersville, 28-18, while Edinboro defeated Clarion, 35-6. Slippery Rock and Edinboro will play for the 76th time, with The Rock holding a 47-21-7 lead in the series. Last week against Millersville, Slippery Rock's defense forced six turnovers for the second straight week. Senior DB Kavin Banks had two fumble recoveries, one pass interception and a team-high eight tackles, and was named PSAC-Western Division "Player of the Week." Senior RB Brandon Markus rushed for 158 yards and two TDs and senior PK John Katsaouni kicked four extra points to boost his team-best points total to 46. Katsaouni is 11-for-14 in field goals and 13-for-14 in extra points.
