Apartment fire traced to grease

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Overheated grease in a pan is listed as the cause of a fire that left the occupants of four apartments in Orange Village looking for temporary housing.
Bob Goeltz, city fire marshal, said the blaze broke out in the kitchen of the apartment occupied by Thomas McWhorter, Vanessa Carr and their children around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
There were no injuries, but the kitchen suffered heavy fire damage and the entire apartment had heat and smoke damage.
Goeltz said smoke also got into three adjoining apartments, making them temporarily uninhabitable.
The American Red Cross is assisting all the fire victims, he said.
The building is insured, but McWhorter and Carr didn't have insurance on their personal property, Goeltz said. No damage estimate was available.
