ACS Mahoning County unit honors volunteers at recognition dinner



Three special awards were presented at the event.
BOARDMAN -- Several special awards were presented when the Mahoning County Unit of the American Cancer Society held a recognition dinner Oct. 14 at Antone's Banquet Centre in honor of the organization's volunteers.
Carol Carr of Poland was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. Carr started the Mahoning County FOCUS breast cancer support group 16 years ago and continues as facilitator of the group. She is a member of the FOCUS team that participates at the Boardman Relay for Life, is a volunteer with Reach to Recovery and is a patient navigator.
Atty. Anne Crawford of Canfield was honored as Woman of the Year. She serves as second vice president and advocacy chairwoman of the Mahoning County unit. She is team captain of the Boardman and Sebring relays and volunteers at the ACS booth at the Canfield Fair and Health-O-Rama. She has also served on various fund-raising committees.
Presented the Man of the Year Award was Russ Clouser of Weathersfield Township. Clouser has spoken during the past year to hundreds of students in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana county schools about overcoming his lung cancer and the dangers of smoking. He belongs to the Church Hill United Methodist Church relay team and is a patient navigator.
The program
Keynote speaker for the event was John Remick, who focused on how the ACS helped his wife and family through her battle with cancer. The state of the unit address was given by Robert DeMarco, unit president.
