YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old boy charged with gross sexual imposition and felonious assault in Boardman escaped from Forum Health Northside Medical Center, where he had a lightweight cast applied, police said.
City police, deputies from the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department and Liberty police joined in the search Wednesday night.
As of this morning, Darrin L. Moore, whose last known address was 1643 McGuffey Road, remained at large, said sheriff's Maj. Michael Budd. The boy, when caught, will be charged with escape, Budd said.
"We checked all his known locations -- mother's, grandmother's -- to no avail," Budd said. "He's been known to possess firearms; we're concerned about public safety."
Arrested last month
Moore has been an inmate at the juvenile justice center since Sept. 9, when arrested after a police pursuit through the North Side of Youngstown and various parts of Trumbull County. He was in a car stolen earlier that day, said Boardman Capt. Jack Nichols.
Moore was last seen wearing dark blue pants, a dark blue sweat shirt, with a lightweight air cast on his left leg and double-cuffed shackles on his right leg. He has this tattoo on his right forearm: R.I.P.
Budd said Moore is black, 5 feet 8 inches and 152 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Moore had complained of leg pain and was taken to the hospital Wednesday evening for treatment, police said.
Around 7:40 p.m., Moore left the hospital with a detention officer from the juvenile justice center and, as they approached the county vehicle, threw down his crutches and ran, Budd said. The boy was last seen running toward the area of Roosevelt Drive and Northview Boulevard.
Vindicator files show that Moore and another boy, Robert Gibson, 17, of Francesca Avenue were charged with accosting an 18-year-old Lisbon woman in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Mathews Road on Sept. 9.
The victim was fondled, robbed, hit in the head with a gun and kicked when she wouldn't get back into her 2002 Dodge Neon, which was then stolen, Nichols said. The car Moore and Gibson drove into the parking lot and left there was later reported stolen.
Gibson was arrested at his home Sept. 11.
The boys were originally arrested on charges of felony aggravated robbery, kidnapping, gross sexual imposition and assault, Nichols said.
