WILMINGTON AREA DISTRICT Petition seeks to keep prom at school
Students signed a petition to dedicate the stadium to coach Terry Verrelli.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Residents of the Wilmington Area School District want the annual prom kept at the high school.
Marie Winter of New Wilmington presented a five-page signed petition Monday night in favor of keeping the prom at the high school.
Winter, who represented parents and students, said she heard over the weekend that the prom might be moved to the New Englander, a banquet center, in Neshannock Township this year.
Superintendent Dr. C. Joyce Nicksick said a final decision has not been made. Nicksick said William Lyon, high school principal, had done a lot of researching before recommending the change, and she asked Lyon to prepare a report discussing the possible relocation of the prom.
Anthony DeRosa, a high school freshman, also presented the board with 65 signatures requesting the new stadium be dedicated to varsity football coach Terry Verrelli.
DeRosa said the signatures consisted of students in grades nine through 12. He added that the majority of those signing were not football players.
He presented two options: to name the field after Verrelli, or have a mural painted on the concession stand wall of Verrelli coaching.
